05:00:33 MJ: I want to make a general kenobi joke.
05:00:45 MJ: But then I start thinking about like new Star Wars and I get sad
05:01:25 syv: Imagine, after the next trilogy, released just in time for you to retire, we'll have r/disneytrilogymemes
05:02:15 syv: People who grew up with those being the big star wars movies will remember them fondly and affectionately, making memes of Finn and his idiot love interest
05:02:39 MJ: Yes the one who keeps almost killing him?
05:03:31 syv: I didn't watch the films. I have a dim view of self harm.
05:03:38 MJ: And almost dooms the republic twice.
05:03:42 syv: "The military said in a Facebook post early on Saturday that an army unit managed to repel Russian forces near its base on a major city street."
05:04:00 MJ: And is so incredibly naive I wanted to reach through the screen and slap while screaming why are you so dumb?
05:04:04 syv: It feels so weird to me that this is an update coming from *facebook*
05:04:33 Devastator: You don't have to get it from facebook. ;-p
05:04:53 Devastator: also, welcome to 2011!
05:05:13 MJ: The problem
syv I almost want to rewatch the movies just to make sure they were as bad as they actually were and I’m not just imaging it and missing some secretly awesome Star Wars movies
05:05:46 syv: This sounds a little like an addiction.
05:05:59 syv: First it's disney star wars, soon it's cutting...
05:06:27 MJ: Look when you have one singular media love for the majority of your early childhood weird things happen.
05:06:57 Devastator: "Man, you're just not understanding my feelings, dude!"
05:07:04 Devastator: "I can quit anytime I want!"
05:15:12 syv: Has something like 40% negative.
05:15:27 Devastator: Is that a lot of people who can't get it?
05:15:39 syv: Basically every review I've seen from someone who can *play* it has only glowing things to say for themselves
05:15:42 Devastator: no offense, but you seemed to be having fun last night.
05:15:54 MJ: Ah. So just an incredible numbers of tech issues
05:15:56 syv: ...But something like a third of the playerbase is having serious game breaking problems.
05:16:25 syv: The anticheat causes a significant minority of players to have the game crash on run *every* time
05:16:57 syv: It has constant stutters and graphical issues on most people's computers, much more than 50%
05:17:16 syv: It's not actually due to intensive graphics, either.
05:18:17 syv: You can fix most of it by turning down graphics a lot (I played on low, because when I loaded in the entire game ran at 20 FPS and had black speckling everywhere), but the fix seems to be because it disables effects that *don't work* rather than actually being demanding.
05:18:37 syv: A lot of people are getting some kinda bug where enemy textures don't load, so they're entirely invisible
05:19:25 syv: I'm apparently around the top third of players in terms of how well it works, and I had to spend the better part of three hours troubleshooting it.
05:19:53 syv: But I wanted to play it with my friends
05:19:56 Devastator: oh,
PW hit that chest
05:21:29 syv: Now I feel guilty to play, because a bunch of people have been locked out. Basically... because FromSoft does not give a fuck what people who don't speak Japanese say about their games.
05:22:54 syv: I wonder if backstabs are still disabled
05:23:03 syv: I might play just to do a couple invasions and see.
05:24:05 MJ: A Japanese company being xenophobic? No~
05:24:30 syv: Not sure I'd call it xenophobia.
05:25:02 syv: More an issue of just not caring and paying attention, than actual malice, I imagine.
05:25:26 Devastator: ..I think if they cared much, their games wouldn't have ended up as good.
05:25:34 Devastator: ie, about pleasing everyone.
05:26:00 Devastator: they have their fans, and they love pleasing their fans, and that niche is wide enough to carve out a nice market for themselves.
05:26:24 syv: FS is *very much* a company with the view that they're making what they want to make, and damn what people say, they've got a vision.
05:27:16 syv: It sucks when that means they were informed multiple times that their netcode allows remote code execution on anyone playing online
05:27:37 syv: Until the entire com, unity is outraged when it starts being used against streamers
05:28:11 syv: THAT is what the crashing is about. The anticheat they kludged in within the last month causes it.
05:28:37 syv: The game doesn't crash anywhere near as much if you pirate it (and therefore don't have functional anticheat on it).
05:31:58 MJ: I’m still watching war things with my twin, but maybe later tonight
05:32:19 ER: I even tried installing it on a different computer, which did get past the title screen but wouldn't work due to terrible framerate
05:32:38 MJ: So is it related to the GPU’s or something?
05:35:16 ER: apparently it's caused by the anitcheat
05:37:02 MJ: Right but why is it only for some?
05:37:43 syv: One of the consistent errors--and the only one they've bothered to fix so far--is that the anticheat ALWAYS crashes your game if your steam ID has a two-byte character in it.
05:37:51 syv: For instance, a Japanese text character.
05:38:18 Devastator: yeah, that seems whoops.
05:40:49 syv: I meant it's the only one they've acknowledged and *said* they'd fix
05:41:07 syv: They haven't mentioned the anticheat crashing the game for any other reason.
05:41:13 MJ: Every modern game just is required to have a rough launch seemingly
05:41:29 syv: This is deeply terrible for a modern game
05:42:10 syv: Really it's their worst PC launch. Even DS1, which needed a fan-made patch on day one (which was provided by a magic hacker) wasn't this bad.
05:42:29 syv: From Soft just commands a lot of respect and the game itself is amazing if it works, so they're getting away with it
05:44:02 syv: He released a day one mod for the game that significantly improved how it worked on PC.
05:44:27 syv: Maybe he got a hold of a review copy, I don't know
05:44:31 Devastator: some pretty impressive work.
05:44:33 MJ: ….actually that is magic now that I think about it
05:44:36 Devastator: maybe just that good.
05:44:43 MJ: How the fuck did he do that?
05:44:57 ER: the game was already out on xbox
05:45:03 MJ: And how was there not a bidding war over him by multiple intellegence agencies~
05:45:07 syv: Probably partly being really good, partly the fix actually being stupidly easy and something the company should have done.
05:45:18 Devastator: there might have been, they just don't advertise that. ;-p
05:45:43 syv: Fromsoft is known for having deeply terrible code, and having things be disabled or enabled or "fixed" in really hackish ways
05:45:58 ER: hmm, do want to see more of steins
05:46:13 syv: We can just let
MJ spend time with his twin
05:46:13 MJ: Oh yeah, like that cursed dark souls video thing
05:46:14 ER: specially seeing as I won't be seeing more of elden
05:46:31 MJ: Yeah I’m busy watching war things with my twin again
05:46:44 MJ: So if you guys want to watch something go ahead
05:46:59 syv: One of the fun little bits of trivia that came from that is that the dragon claw fist actually doesn't change your unarmed strength.
05:47:25 syv: It just applies a script, only active during your unarmed attacks, which multiplies your damage by 20.
05:47:58 syv: All the modders were terribly confused about *why*, because there's way better systems to do this available to *THEM*.
05:49:54 ER: I think that from just don't care at all how elegant their solutions are
05:50:22 syv: In coding, an elegant solution is a solution.
05:50:43 syv: An inelegant solution is a more severe problem than what you tried to fix.
05:51:30 syv: This specific one is an unusual case because it took a decade to find out, modders have been grappling with From's actually bad and harmful hackish bandaids since the game came out.
05:51:46 syv: Quite literally, since the game came out. Again, DSFix was a day one fan mod.
05:53:00 MJ: No an inelegant solution is a problem for future you. And fuck that guy. ~
05:53:35 MJ: I’ve have attempted to learn.
05:53:59 MJ: But I’ve never really sat down and learned it.
05:54:46 MJ: Also I’m vaguely terrified that given my tech curse I’ll destroy something important somehow~
05:54:49 syv: Thinking of the scripts I've made for you
05:55:04 MJ: I am cursed
syv. You know this
05:55:53 syv: You were _very afraid_ that your tech curse would somehow destroy a fifteen line python script that rolls a die, does a lookup, and prints a few lines of text.
05:57:59 MJ: I’m pretty sure it showed it to a witch doctor he’d start cursing to every god just to try to find out why they had all collaborated to curse me
06:02:14 syv: Apparently DSFix was made by Durante, and he spent about a week prior to the game's release to prepare an "interception dll framework" for DaS. The actual fix DSFix implemented was a one line code change that took him 23 minutes to figure out with said interception. A few hours to implement the fix, test it, and add a config.
06:27:37 Devastator: yeah, that's competence.
