04:04:47 syv: The "ceilometer" is a laser that shoots clouds to see how high they are.
04:05:02 syv: It "measures" the height of the "ceiling".
04:05:39 syv: So it's the thingy that tells us how high clouds are, and beeps at us angrily if they're too low.

04:06:15 syv: _Absolutely_ necessary for learning the job, though everyone currently here just uses it as a helpful tool. As far as I'm aware.
04:07:23 syv: More important for making us respond more rapidly to low ceilings (since we mostly only check hourly, while it's continual). Though lately it's been giving lots of false alarms due to condensation, which messes with the laser.
