05:21:42 Devastator: There's Adam Savage realizing that the whole point of entertainment is to watch people who are totally into whatever it is they do.
05:21:46 Devastator: or just missing it.
05:42:52 syv: Well, I fell back asleep after waking up.
05:52:26 Devastator: looks like the remington takes longer to aim than the other shotguns.
05:52:35 Devastator: in return, it's more accurate, hits harder and has much, much less recoil.
05:54:56 syv: That makes sense. Ridiculously long barrel and mag tube.
05:56:16 syv: Auto, super low recoil, mobile, mag fed.
05:59:15 Devastator: nash, what I need is a belt-feed conversion kit. ;-p
05:59:41 Devastator: "Oh, hey, shock absorbers use fabrication 6, and I'm at 91%. That'll put me over to 7."
05:59:52 Devastator: Fabrication 6 (99%)
06:06:47 Devastator: (I have a few books for that last bit.)
06:09:41 syv: Belt feed conversion kit, huh?
06:09:49 syv: ...I'd love to see a beltfed shotgun.
06:17:05 syv: And of course someone has done that to a fucking AR15 of all things.
06:17:09 Devastator: I don't think it's finished.
06:18:46 Devastator: keep getting distracted from finishing up the car.
06:27:53 Devastator: if it hadn't been known, this is going to be one of those updates that makes it clear that Trence = dragon.
06:28:07 Devastator: his first impression of a greatsword is that more metal is shinier. ;-p
06:31:53 Devastator: (rolling for three days time)
06:32:14 Devastator: (the kids are too scatterbrained to try and train or something, so nope)
06:42:28 syv: I feel the need to yell at everyone else playing this Zelda game for being incompetent.
06:43:08 syv: It's vaugely ironic, someone complained that I described my char as "veteran", because we're all at starting level.
06:43:25 syv: But in terms of competence, everyone else has no clue what they're doing...
06:44:16 Devastator: Did you jump into extinction because it was less incompetent?
06:44:42 syv: No, I jumped into Extinction because I had more free time again.
06:45:25 Devastator: also yay to find out it's still incompetent.
06:45:54 syv: I'd say it's less broken than the Zelda game, mechanically.
06:46:01 syv: The Zelda game is delicious.
06:47:35 Devastator: There aren't that many mechanics in Extinction.
06:47:48 syv: True. And it's way less free.
06:48:12 syv: Still, it doesn't ever make me go "Ohhhh! That's exploitable!"
06:48:53 syv: I suspect this group of players is also just a different crowd. It's iN FG&RP, not RTD, and a bunch of people aren't bolding actions. Or recording stuff on their charsheets correctly.
06:49:33 Devastator: and yes, Battle Aura is supposed to be something very nice.
06:49:39 Devastator: it was the reward for a fairly serious puzzle.
06:49:48 syv: We didn't get to build our characters from the ground up, choosing every technique and spell from a list of like 40.
06:51:30 Devastator: Well, expect to get a chance for a new skill or upgrade one before too much longer.
06:51:50 Devastator: could have done that during this downtime, but nobody thought of it and the kids like fun too much to do that unprompted.
06:53:37 syv: We have a wizard who didn't cast a real spell, got knocked down to 25% HP in one hit in the first round, which activates his "dodge better at 25% or less HP" feat. His action this round, after being told "kill the enemy which has an autohit attack"... was to heal himself to 42% HP (he'll still die in one hit, but has worse dodge chance), and to do this, he has to stay within range of another attack.
06:53:57 syv: His heal is also hilariously bad.
06:54:48 syv: Burns 2 of his 16 MP (burned mana regens over days, not within five minutes like normal), to heal 2 HP.
06:55:26 Devastator: well, someone's getting downed.
06:55:37 syv: I actually posted to explain all this.
06:55:46 syv: Because that is just too stupid to let go.
06:56:15 syv: We also already had the smith get downed, but he got the GM to retcon him parrying an attack (GM error), so he's up with minimal HP.
06:56:47 syv: ...Aaaaand he'd choosing to charge forward as everyone else retreats, so this is actually worse than before, where Egan would pick up his helpless body and drag him to safety.
06:57:25 Devastator: there's no reason to worry about loot slots.
06:57:35 Devastator: Sessha isn't in your inventory.
06:59:34 Devastator: Also, you get to see something that everyone forgot about come in handy.
07:00:38 Devastator: you want to make a guess?
07:01:53 syv: ...I think I forgot it too, so no.
07:02:44 syv: Best idea for keeping Red April is saving money upgrading Alice's eventual weapon.
07:03:00 syv: But then, I expect Alice to come in with her own equipment.
07:03:49 Devastator: actually, selling it here is fine.
07:03:55 Devastator: there are trappers in this town.
07:04:20 Devastator: some places you wouldn't get much because it's a weird weapon.
07:07:53 syv: So what's the forgotten thing?
07:08:08 Devastator: The white communications rod.
07:08:44 Devastator: With the circumstances of your return, Sessha didn't give them back.
07:09:06 syv: Yep, this is something I also forgot about.
07:09:17 Devastator: so, "Hey, Uncle, what's up?"
07:10:08 syv: I wonder what all the other people think about the surprise army
07:10:48 Devastator: but fortunately, they haven't caught up yet.
07:11:00 Devastator: they're like right there, but still about half a day away.
07:11:20 Devastator: there goes all the lead built up by using webshooters to go over the mountains, which was a big help.
07:11:29 Devastator: still, Sessha's worth it.
07:11:44 Devastator: posted. No orders yet, just a big to be continued.
07:12:03 Devastator: I hope those aren't too awful to see.
07:13:09 syv: Trence just casually ate a ridiculously poisonous monster, I assume?
07:14:06 Devastator: that's what he does.
07:14:17 Devastator: edited those couple sentences heavily.
07:14:23 Devastator: I do too-long sentences.
07:15:01 syv: Same. It reads well in its current form, though.
07:20:24 Devastator: next update is more travel and more talk with Sessha.
07:20:33 Devastator: unless a bad roll means more fights.
07:20:41 Devastator: well, even so, just less travel.
07:21:50 Devastator: glad the update's good.
07:28:12 syv: In the monster balancing segment of the rulebook, they talk about certain levels of monsters requiring attacks which deal triple [stat] damage.
07:28:47 syv: There's a spell of each element with that damage level, but only one martial technique. And it requires the enemy to already be at 25% or less HP.
07:29:55 syv: They also have some techniques and feats for chars who dual-wield weapons... but it's ridiculously worse than a sword and board character. There's no advantage at all to it, only expensive ways to make it less worse.
07:30:11 syv: I have an increasing desire to rewrite their system.
07:32:29 syv: ...Yeah, there's *so many* ways it's bad, actually.
07:41:27 syv: In this game that centers so much about equipment level, there's only two advantages to using a non-crap shield. 1: snowboarding. 2: using the shield as your primary weapon, with a zero-quality parrying dagger.
07:41:52 syv: Ironically, the second is a fairly solid choice. Still far better than dual wielding.
07:46:40 ChanServ has quit [*.net *.split]
07:51:02 Devastator: you know, I know what's so annoying about the lifting requirement.
07:51:24 Devastator: there are hand tools that let you lift stuff like that. You have to attach them to something, but all you need is a few chains.
07:57:04 syv: There's a special game mechanic for sliding down a slope on top of your shield.
07:57:24 syv: Basically drains durability from it at an absurd rate, in exchange for doubling your movement.
07:58:25 syv: A high quality shield will last much longer. Otherwise, quality of a shield only really matters for how much damage it deals.
07:59:27 syv: They should *really* have just let shields give a passive boost to armor, based on rank. And then improved parries a ton, so blocking isn't so much superior.
08:06:43 Devastator: dual weapons sucking is a zelda thing.
08:06:48 Devastator: only villains do that.
08:09:58 syv: Stupid shortsighted designers.
08:10:18 syv: Basically wanted to imitate Zelda, so they made sword and board the best.
08:11:12 syv: There's also no AoO mechanic, which is just awful for a game with so many fun positioning mechanics.
08:12:01 syv: Lots of movement-related spells and techniques, but when it's basically free to move however you like--excepting kiting--where's the use for it?
08:18:54 syv: ...And suddenly I realize the swordbeam abilities are auto-hit. Damn.
08:20:08 syv: And ridiculously cheap, too. Basic swordbeam gives you bow range, autohit, and about the best damage possible, while being free. This is balanced by requiring you to be at full health, and would be totally fine if it weren't autohit.
08:20:32 syv: Peril beam lets you do it if near minimum health, and actually costs a small amount of stamina, but gives you double damage.
08:21:30 syv: More problematic, sword beam is in the cheapest tier of abilities. There's very little reason *not* to take it. You should get to use it at minimum once every battle.
08:25:24 syv: But why make it autohit? It's fine if it's not autohit!
08:25:33 syv: Just to make it ridiculously better???
08:26:58 Devastator: All I can do is say 'zelda' again.
08:28:41 Devastator: I suppose the low interactivity is to some degree forced by the choice of Act 2 focus.
08:28:52 Devastator: 'Run Coward' doesn't lead to as much input as is normal.
08:32:28 syv: Ehhh, no, it's more the nature of the game itself. It's more like we're playing a JRPG video game than a TTRPG.
08:32:55 syv: In a JRPG you don't tend to get anywhere near the same amount of customization of your characters.
08:36:06 Devastator: I meant 'interactivity' not 'customization'
08:40:34 syv: Ahh. Alright, then yes. :P
08:43:40 Devastator: you can now make folding vehicles other than plain bicycles.
08:43:48 Devastator: if every component can fold, the whole vehicle can fold up.
08:46:43 Devastator: small batteries are foldable.
08:46:49 Devastator: there are no foldable engines.
08:47:09 syv: Can you make a folding electric ATV, then?
08:49:08 Devastator: yes, but I'm not certain as to the range of said vehicle.
08:49:31 Devastator: (and no, not entirely, as you'd then need to attach the motor after unfolding it)
08:49:36 Devastator: (It's doable enough, really.)
08:50:19 syv: Would it be light enough to actually be carryable?
08:51:03 Devastator: I was thinking just putting it in a trunk.
08:51:09 Devastator: so I can drive back to pick up a second vehicle.
08:51:37 Devastator: and have it be powered by like an 0.9 l engine. 2L fuel tanks are foldable.
08:52:30 Devastator: as for carryable, give me a sec.
08:52:38 Devastator: I want a quad for the fun of it, so 4 small wheels.
08:53:24 Devastator: huh, I don't actually need a battery for a 1 cylinder engine.
08:57:16 Devastator: okay, so 20 kg for the engine, about 10kg for each wheel, about 3.5kg for each frame, which will be seven spaces..
08:57:25 Devastator: - the eninge since that doesn't fold.
08:57:36 Devastator: I can't pocket it, but it's carryable by a strong character.
08:58:12 syv: put a trunk on it and it'd be a nice raiding tool.
08:59:18 Devastator: but there are bike baskets.
08:59:53 Devastator: it's too soft for that. I'd want either a one tile magic vehicle or an armoured bed toy if I were going that way.
09:00:59 Devastator: no windshield, which also makes driving entertaining.
09:01:21 Devastator: there are cloth panels, but you can't see past them. Might have three in front to cover the wheels a bit.
09:02:33 Devastator: and headlights, which is hilarious.
09:02:59 Devastator: Can probably afford one of those.
09:03:08 Devastator: but that will need a battery.
09:03:21 Devastator: battery, attachable 1 cylinder engine, no alternator.
09:04:39 Devastator: yeah, you don't need a welder to attach that engine, just a wrench.
09:26:11 syv: Is a one tile vehicle a powered unicycle?
09:52:17 syv: Can you melee/shoot zombies while riding that monster?
09:58:04 Devastator: you can shoot, yes.
09:58:06 Devastator: if you're good enough.
09:59:25 syv: Some kind armored mutant ninja riding a motorized unicycle through a city while mowing down zombies with an AR.
10:09:16 ER has joined #einsteinianroulette
10:16:27 ER: dreamed of a family of magic users fighting a leviathan at a preordained time?
10:18:06 ER: I can't think of precisely what you're refering to at this moment
10:18:58 syv: Raising sim about teaching a magical girl princess things.
10:19:22 syv: IIRC she can end up fighting a magic leviathan. And presumably dying.
10:19:59 ER: apparently we had the option of disabling magic use by both us and the leviathan at the start of the battle, which would have probably not been in our favor
10:20:48 syv: On the other hand, that might have ended with you killing it by ramming it with a boat.
10:20:56 syv: Or just stabbing it with a greatsword.
10:23:47 ER: would have been good if we were mostly martial classes, obviously
10:26:34 ER: hey, shield quality matters for another thing in zelda!
10:27:02 ER: or, how many fights you can go without grabbing a new shield
10:27:23 ER: probably slightly less useful with repairing rules, though
10:27:55 syv: Yeah, but with a rank 1 shield, it'll last six fights before needing a replacement.
10:28:15 syv: Literally anyone can mock together a level 0 shield trivially, if the area has wood.
10:29:12 syv: Could matter at a low level, but if you're at all established I can't see it being a problem.
10:30:42 ER: hmm, but yeah, if they were just trying to copy botw they're missing a fairly important mechanic there
10:30:55 syv: Pot lids at least do break after one encounter, so they're pretty crap.
10:31:11 ER: can get buard broken very easily if you block a big enemy with a pot lid
10:31:32 ER: and the next encounter, you pick up another pot lid :p
10:31:57 syv: I invite you to find me a convenient pot lid in this zombie-crab infested infinite beach.
10:32:12 syv: Again, I'd prolly make shields add their rank to your defense while held.
10:32:55 syv: You only get +1-5, which isn't huge, but considering the cost of another ranked item--and the fact that higher armor is better the more you have--it'd be worthwhile.
10:32:57 ER: "hey irony, think I could pick up a pot lid for something?"
10:33:08 syv: And then probably buff double weapons.
10:33:25 syv: Make a cheap 3-token feat which lets you double attack for 1 stamina.
10:33:53 syv: Suspect I'd buff twohanders as well.
10:34:43 syv: Did you notice how ridiculous sword beam is?
10:36:15 ER: more focused on playing a character that's not just playing zelda, to be honest :p
10:37:26 syv: At least with magic there's binded effects, elemental toys, and mechanics that you outright can't get any other way.
10:37:30 ER: I wonder how much fatal strike is even worth it
10:37:35 syv: Techniques? Just way way too expensive.
10:37:49 syv: I struggle to think of a situation where it would be particuarly useful. :(
10:37:53 ER: you deal a huge amount of damage to an enemy that's already mostly dead for all your stamina~
10:40:06 ER: bosses could have fairly close margins, so it could be the difference between victory and defeat
10:40:29 ER: provided that I actually hit my Learn Lore so I know how much HP it has :v
10:46:21 syv: I suppose it *is* the cheapest triple stat attack.
10:47:42 ER: it would probably have been a better idea to take a bit more accuracy and a bit less combat and use Combo instead of Lethal Strike
10:50:26 syv: Triple attack means triple armor mitigation.
10:50:50 syv: We're already meeting heavy armor, and I doubt that'll change.
10:51:30 ER: 6 seems to be "medium" for grade 1 enemies
10:53:08 ER: combo would also give more chances for random maneuvers, right?
10:54:49 syv: For all the good those do. :P
10:55:05 syv: More crit chances is alright, I suppose. 17% chance of a crit every attack.
10:55:46 syv: ...Huh. Crits do double weapon damage, rather than double combat.
10:55:55 syv: And weapon damage will usually be a good bit above.
10:56:03 syv: That's... actually a pretty good trade, then.
10:56:55 ER: (it's still a hilarious interaction that weaponless attacks can crit, but deal the exact same amount of damage)
10:57:58 ER: so crit enchantment combo would be good
10:58:11 syv: Yeah, weapon damage is usually double your damage stat, assuming normal progression.
10:58:53 ER: if so, maybe prioritize weapon damage over accuracy
10:59:46 syv: Anyways, if an attack normally does 3X, then your final strike thingy will deal 5X. And a crit will also deal 5X.
11:00:56 syv: So combo would be 9X-3Y to 15X-3Y, HEAVILY tending towards 9X, while final strike is 5X-Y on imperiled targets only.
11:02:21 syv: Ohh, it's actually only a roll of 12. I thought it was doubles for some reason.
11:03:14 ER: can crit on 11 with an enchantment and I think that's it?
11:03:22 syv: Can get a crit gem which increases the range, but not by that much really. Rank 1 gives you a 25% crit chance.
11:03:43 syv: Crit range is buffed by rank + 0.5*rank.
11:03:54 syv: So a level 1 enchant puts it to crit on 10-12.
11:04:59 syv: Rank 5 enchant would be 8-12.
11:05:15 syv: Everything rounds up, unless it doesn't.
11:06:09 ER: rank 5 would be really good, if you... had someone with max enchant skill, a fully upgraded forge, and a perfect gem
11:07:20 ER: want to write, can't think very straight though
11:08:52 syv: Rank 5 enchantments get stupid.
11:09:42 syv: A rank 5 mighty enchant gives Fenil +8 damage on attacks in demon form, multiplied by spells.
11:30:55 ER: accidentially made a kawaii little serving of instant grits because I still don't know how to measure things, apparently
11:31:54 syv: It helps to use some kind of container.
11:33:11 ER: I just couldn't figure out how I was supposed to measure 3 tbsp
11:33:31 ER: so instead I just put stuff in a bowl in what seemed like reasonable proportions
11:33:34 syv: Oh, I asked Irony in Discord, he gave Solun that parry.
11:33:51 syv: So you can't rescue him from his own stupidity any more.
11:36:42 ER: how safe will I be if I don't sprint north and the soaker doesn't die?
11:37:53 syv: Well it'll probably murder reed or Solun first?
11:38:41 ER: still don't know what Solun is actually doing
11:39:03 syv: You currently have six tiles of distance, so if you move six... it needs to have a move of 4 to reach you. Which I think it does have.
11:39:34 syv: His action is to use a windup strike on the soak.
11:39:49 ER: that was his LAST turn's action
11:40:06 ER: which for some reason he still posted even though he could have seen he was late
11:40:32 syv: Irony apparently missed that, as he didn't roll vs conc.
11:43:14 ER: if I hit the soak with my shiekah dagger, I think it would be 1 off lethal, right?
11:43:52 ER: 7 weapon + 3 combat - 6 defense = 4 damage
11:44:57 syv: Ah, no, that should be a kill. I deal 15 damage, down to 9. Soak has 12 HP, and already took one point of damahe, so 2HP left.
11:47:05 ER: either we can beat these or I can get a new weapon
11:53:52 ER: you know, goron style weapons don't seem very good
11:54:05 ER: less damage, more durability
11:54:30 ER: meaning... less ability to pierce defense, but less materials spent over time?
11:59:45 ER: may as well go boko style so that you can live in the woods and kill things with sharp sticks~
12:03:04 syv: Boko would've been VERY good for this situation, yes.
12:05:59 ER: though even if you have a bunch of boko spears to toss around, it might not be better than dross toss for damaging craaabs
12:06:24 ER: of course, we're assuming that we're fighting crabs just because these are the first enemies we meet
12:06:41 ER: there might be other rank 1 enemies with a lot less defense
12:15:22 ER: but the big crabs are the same rank as us, more or less
12:15:33 syv: They have way too much armor to be rank one.
12:16:23 ER: which is rank 1, medium armor
12:16:36 ER: and they're crabs, so it makes sense for them to count as armored
12:17:00 ER: and they lose out on some mobility for it, which is why they're speed 4
12:17:14 ER: or wait, no, that's just evasion
12:17:27 ER: I don't know why they're slow. probably just because they're crabs
12:17:56 syv: Which by the book is about a rank 2 heavy
12:18:16 ER: swarms have 1 hp, they don't even binefit from defense
12:19:07 ER: hmm, yeah, I dunno why that has 10 defense
12:24:02 syv: But yeah. Their attacks mostly twoshot us, while ours take *many* more than two to kill. My attacks are our best, and I need to land four to kill a shambler.
12:25:10 syv: ...Do we have anyone else who reasonably *can* kill a shambler without relying on chip damage?
