02:35:33 ER: I wonder if
syv will ever be around at a time for movie watching
02:38:51 Devastator: hopefully not too long.
03:10:17 Devastator: set a new record for ransom recieved in Medieval:TW.
03:11:26 Devastator: and 29,000 and change florins.
03:13:12 Devastator: got a king and his heir.

08:40:38 syv: Oh. The TW bounty. That scenario seems rather weird--capturing the king *and* his heir? And then just... selling them back, along with an army, for really any sum?
08:41:11 syv: I can see how it could be a worthwhile trade from both sides' perspectives, but it's still just weird.
08:46:57 Devastator: The faction had no choice.
08:47:13 Devastator: They re-emerged in two regions I'd just hit from the Byzantines.
08:47:41 Devastator: basically killing their army lead to a rebellion, which lead to about four, five thousand of their soldiers popping out of nowhere.
08:48:27 Devastator: The byzantines also counterattacked one of the region, so there was a battle with ten thousand men in it.. four thousand of my guys, three thousand egyptians, and three thousand byzantines.
08:49:53 Devastator: Anyway, I was technically the defender, having secured the region by booting out the previous byzantine stack on the previous turn, so only had to defend. The map had a good hill on it, and I'd lucked out and gotten a winter battle in Palestine, so my plate-mail wearing knights didn't boil in their armour.
08:50:11 Devastator: There were something like six previous battles that turn already so..
08:51:55 Devastator: Anyway, the byzantines attacked first, and their nine-star general and pretty good quality troops were slowly breaking my army. They mulched through two units of spears, two units of swords, one and a half units of knights and a unit of light cav.
08:52:53 Devastator: about half my starting stack and my best troops, but eventually my arbalesters started knocking down their Kataphracts and I got to hit their general with two charges, followed up by temporarily surrounding him. He then tried to pull out, but got killed before managing to cut his way free.
08:52:57 Devastator: It was a really near-run thing.
08:55:12 Devastator: After that, the byzantines tried to break the egyptians and harassed me with horse archers, but without the commander couldn't manage to get it done.
08:55:39 Devastator: Then the AI glitched, and the Egyptians didn't move to an offensive stance which might, or might not have beaten my troops. I think I'd have held, but it would have been close.
08:56:15 Devastator: it took enough time I could bring up fresh units, and had reassembled mostly another good stack, if not quite balanced as I'd wanted it to be.
08:57:43 syv: But... why would they have no choice?
08:57:55 syv: "Ohp, king's dead, guess we'll have to replace him. Oh well!"
08:58:12 Devastator: They had no choice because the king and his heir were both captured in the same battle.
08:58:31 Devastator: that was a no-retreat battle for them because that battle happened to occur before the other rebellion in the neighboring province.
08:58:35 syv: Better than going bankrupt and being unable to even field an army. And if it *didn't* bankrupt them, then why sell them back a powerful general and army?
08:59:02 Devastator: I didn't have a choice but to sell them those troops. They were taken by surrender after time out, not killed or captured on the battlefield, where I could have done that.
08:59:34 Devastator: I could have tried to fight them, but I'd suffered over a thousand casulties and it would have been iffy at best.
08:59:57 syv: So they weren't *really* captured?
09:00:01 Devastator: The faction didn't die because they'd won the other battle in Arabia, which was a similar stack against about six hundred troops.
09:00:13 Devastator: they were captured due to the battle timing out and no retreat being available.
09:00:47 Devastator: Anyway, they still have six thousand troops and will not be trivial to stop, even if they don't have any money to buy new ones.
09:01:34 syv: So you're forced to sell troops "captured" by timing out, but not those captured by surrender...?
09:01:52 Devastator: captured by being captured in battle you can decide to kill them before ending the battle.
09:02:03 Devastator: captured by surrender you can't.
09:02:10 Devastator: because that happens after the end of the battle.
09:03:04 syv: And you can't just keep them prisoner? Throw them in a jail?
09:04:46 Devastator: That's how it works, yeah.
09:05:00 Devastator: Looking at the logfile, it only gave me half the egyptians, and I'd gotten lucky to do both.
09:05:10 Devastator: no time for that to happen before the end of turn.
09:07:57 Devastator: it is dumb, but that's how it works. If I'd wanted them dead, I should have fought them on the battlefield.
09:09:06 Devastator: Man.. some of those units got mulched. I'm looking at a specialized unit of elite swordsmen that had to be produced out of my capital, which usually only makes knights. It had two weapon upgrades and three armour upgrades, and went 16-53 on kill death.
09:10:01 Devastator: spear unit that went 10-117..
09:10:07 Devastator: knight unit that went 25-47.
09:10:30 syv: This is TW: Medieval I, right?
09:12:40 Devastator: that knight unit with the one survivor went 47-50, so traded 1:1 I guess..
09:13:25 Devastator: IIRC he got some enemy arbalests before running into more knights, so.. yeah ouch.
09:13:54 Devastator: overall it was a good trade, but the killing was done by my crossbows.
09:14:33 syv: I used to play TW II, over a decade ago.
09:15:17 syv: I pretty much never played the actual tactical battles though, just auto'd them and played the strategic game. Fairly incompetently.
09:15:28 Devastator: I do auto a lot of the battles.
09:15:44 Devastator: sometimes because I don't want to do the time, sometimes because I think the auto will give me a better result..
09:15:55 Devastator: but I wasn't going to miss a three-way battle with 10,000 men.
