07:23:32 syv: Man, I had not realized just how terrible the Skorpion is. Was. 10 or 20 rounds, of *.32 ACP*, automatic, but twice as long and heavy as a normal pistol. Arguably the folding stock and foregripish magazine would make it better, but you've still got low capacity and power for the bulk.
07:24:55 syv: The stechkin automatic pistol was designed eight years earlier, was 9mm, and *also* had 20 round mags. So more power, but lighter and shorter, making it actually holsterable in a normal way.

07:29:41 syv: They're scrappy terms. A machine pistol is a pistol which is fully automatic. A submachine gun is a machine gun firing a pistol caliber. A machine gun is, strictly speaking, an automatic gun. They therefore aren't mutually exclusive, but don't mean the same thing.
