23:03:37 syv: I swear, we've normally got more than three permasilents.
23:03:43 syv: Also, hi ER.
23:04:03 ER: hey
23:06:07 syv: What have you been up to?
23:07:17 ER: yesterday I ate out and then read the DnD monster manual until 2AM
23:07:34 syv: Hah.
23:07:35 ER: for... I don't know why I did that, really.
23:07:54 syv: I've done that before. The monster manual is a fun read.
23:08:05 ER: I just like reading about silly fanasy creatures, I guess.
23:09:07 ER: It also makes you want to make a campaign revolving around vampires or mind flayers and such.
23:09:15 syv: Oh yes.
23:09:18 ER: I don't even like the DnD world very much.
23:09:34 syv: "There's so much potential with this monster! You could make a whole story with it!"
23:09:42 ER: Yup.
23:11:25 ER: Also reading about the Kenku made me wonder if I could pull one off as a player character. They're wingless bird people who can mimic any sound, but can't speak normally.
23:11:41 ER: So you have to communicate using only phrases you've heard before.
23:12:06 ER: Presumably in the exact voice of the person who said it before.
23:15:00 syv: That's pretty neat. What edition was this?
23:15:11 ER: 5e
23:16:04 syv: I suppose later editions do have some good ideas.
23:16:16 ER: I don't think they're set up to be player characters or anything, this is the monster manual. But you could fairly plausably play as anything that's humanoid and at least 10 int, right?
23:16:46 ER: And medium sized.
23:16:57 syv: You can reasonably play as any humanoid with >3 int in 3.5, same for 5e I'd assume.
23:17:24 ER: I can't be a housecat? :(
23:17:29 syv: Hell, don't even need large size. Big provides some issues on occasion, but small is pretty straightforward.
23:17:44 syv: You'd have to have awakening cast on you, then convince the GM.
23:18:30 ER: Does awakening permanantly increase Int? I haven't read the spell.
23:18:56 syv: Then you'd need to play some sort of caster class too, which would be simultaneously OP (because you're small and have great natural stealth bonuses), and bad (you have no thumbs, and your bodytype requires custom magic items).
23:19:23 syv: In 3.5e it permanently replaces all three mental stats with newly rolled 3d6 stats.
23:19:33 ER: Can things without thumbs event do somatic components?
23:20:05 ER: huh, that's a cool spell then.
23:20:35 syv: I believe it's stated somewhere that all creatures can do somatic components in their natural form. Even if not, it would be a weird GM if they wouldn't let you take the Druid's Wild Spell feat, which lets animals cast all spells.
23:20:48 ER: Then you roll three ones for int and permanantly have 3 again. :P
23:21:31 syv: Well, IIRC normal cats have 2, so you're still 50% smarter than usual!
23:22:07 ER: So if I somehow made a gelatnous cube sapeint and taught it spellcasting, it's wobbly jiggling would count as somatic.
23:22:19 syv: Yes.
23:22:20 ER: I remember the cat having 3.
23:22:35 ER: And I read it last night so my iirc trumps yours!
23:22:42 syv: In 3.5e all animals have either 1 or 2. Higher than that means it's sapient.
23:22:48 ER: huh
23:22:52 syv: They could've just changed it in 5e, though.
23:23:17 ER: I think 5e gives mammals and such 3 int, reptiles 2, and insects 1
23:23:39 syv: That's racist. Or... kingdomist?
23:23:46 ER: heh
23:24:56 syv: I googled it, 3.5e awakening only gens all three mental stats for awakened *trees*. For animals, it gens a new 3d6 int, gives +1d3 cha, and doesn't change wis. Plus it grants 2 HD, which is annoying.
23:25:35 ER: Makes sense because cats already have 12 wisdom iirc
23:25:50 syv: Cats naturally have 7 cha, so I guess Dar's general rude behavior was accurate to his stats.
23:26:11 ER: Also, not kingdomist. Kingdomist is being racist against plants, fungus, and bacteria.
23:26:19 syv: Interesting that the writers decided that cats are notably wiser than humans, on average.
23:26:35 ER: Wisdom is for perception, remember.
23:26:52 syv: Ahhh. Yeah, that would do it.
23:26:54 ER: and cha is force of personality
23:27:19 syv: They already get much more significant boosts to the spot and listen skills, though. Eh.
23:27:32 ER: Like, tieflings get a bonus to cha despite being shunned by society, which sounds contradictory at first.
23:27:49 syv: Also that's funny, since cats have terrible vision compared to humans. Great night-vision, but they're very shortsighted.
23:28:44 ER: Older humans also tend to have worse eyesight, but dnd gives them more wisdom.
23:28:45 syv: Tieflings are shunned by society, but they're still likable people. It's like being a charismatic black person in 1900s USA.
23:30:54 ER: Also rules that swap your body and such keep your natural int, wis, and cha; while changing your str, dex, and con. So in DnD's system, your perception is more a mental attribute than just how good your senses are.
23:31:22 ER: Cats are lone hunters, so it would make sense if they're more focused and alert than farmers.
23:33:29 ER: Hmm.
23:37:46 syv: ?mmH
23:39:19 ER: I thought for a second that 5e cats lack darkvision (not low-light vision, that doesn't exist now) and that would be strange, but then I remember that darkvision is part of the statblock and not a trait for monsters so I might have just missed it.
23:40:52 ER: I guess if you really wanted to simulate cat perception, they'd have a base 12 wis, bonus to hearing and smelling, darkvision, and malus to things that rely on vision alone.
23:41:15 ER: And the special ability to sense things moving in tall grass within a certain radius!
23:41:52 ER: But all the mundane creatures are in the back of the book so they have short entries. ;P
23:42:00 syv: Heh. 3.5e cats already get a bunch of huge bonuses in tall grass, that would just make them absurd.
23:42:25 ER: cats are great.
23:42:41 syv: Cat in a field? Might be able to 1v1 a peasant. Cat in tall grass? 1v4s adventurers.
23:43:12 ER: challenge rating: RUN, FOOL
23:46:35 syv: Remember that time when you ran DaS as ab IRC suggestion game for me?
23:46:46 ER: yes
23:47:21 syv: You could make that your suggestion game. Possibly with the modification that the player is a cat, rather than the Chosen Undead.
23:47:55 syv: Gains souls in the usual way, levels up by just being in the same area when something or other dies.
23:48:12 syv: Stalk adventurers and steal the souls they earn.
23:50:18 syv: Eat humanities to build up a high natural armor, level strength to ungodly levels so your claws deal real damage, etc.
23:50:46 syv: A cat killing hollows makes no less sense than a man swinging around a solid metal greatclub that's larger than him.
23:51:08 ER: indeed
23:51:43 ER: Though, woudn't it be odd for a *cat* to collect *humanity*? :P
23:52:22 ER: I mean, the rats collect humanity through eating corpses, but they don't seem to gain armor from it.
23:52:40 ER: Also, what happens if the cat dies? Game over?
23:52:53 syv: Humanity is just the dark soul. Anything can have it.
23:53:09 syv: You can absorb humanity directly from rats if the local boss is alive, after all.
23:53:30 ER: "If the soul is the source of all life, then what distinguishes the humanity we hold within ourselves?"
23:53:40 syv: Well, the cat could be undead. But yeah, permadeath seems most appropriate.
23:53:45 syv: Jack shit, really.
23:54:19 ER: heh, being a lordsoul fragment is pretty special.
23:54:59 syv: That's like saying that I'm special because I'm a planet fragment.
23:57:06 ER: Lordsouls appear to work fundementally differently from normal souls.
23:57:47 ER: You can't fabricate humanity from a bunch of souls, and you can't kindle or reverse hollowing at all with souls.
23:58:13 syv: Either that, or normal souls are just way too watered down by comparison.
23:58:34 ER: That is, what distinguishes humanity from souls is that they're different fucking things, doofus.
23:58:57 ER: But then, you can't dilute humanity into normal souls and level up using them.
23:59:10 syv: Kindling and becoming human specifically require the use of Manus' lord soul. You can't do those things with Gwyn's lord soul either, after all. Buuut you totally can shatter Gwyn
23:59:24 syv: the remains of Gwyn's lord soul, and get a ton of normal souls.
23:59:45 syv: Same with Manus.
