01:20:46 Devastator: mmm. I was worried about that. The active probe in the star league mech took a hit, and it's 'Extinct', which means it's irreplaceable.

03:26:26 Devastator: next up, figure out what it actually does.
03:26:28 Devastator: ;-p
04:43:29 Devastator: oh damn, I hope THIS captured pilot defects.
04:43:51 Devastator: 3/3, natural talent Piloting (rerolls failed checks) and Weapon Specialist Medium Laser. (+2 to hit)
05:27:32 Devastator: now if only I knew how that worked.
05:28:01 Devastator: (The AAR suggested that there is some other method other than 'everyone flips' and 'noone flips' but I have no idea how to make that work.)

08:58:54 syv: Oh hello Egan
08:58:57 syv: How art thou
08:59:25 Egan: doing ok
08:59:50 Egan: I'm thinking it's okay to wake up around now, it's just very early morning
09:05:44 syv: Yes.
09:05:54 syv: Waking up hours before you have to do anything is very nice.
09:08:35 Egan: yeah
09:09:06 Egan: must be why farmers and the like are morning people v.v
09:10:46 Devastator: Nah, with them, it's 'there are 14 hours of work to do today.'
09:18:25 Egan: too many!
09:26:56 Egan: bleb
09:27:03 Egan: how are you?
10:02:18 Devastator: okay.

10:24:17 syv: I'm... fine.
10:24:23 syv: Addicted to this stupid mech gane.
10:24:34 syv: In which I don't use mechs.
10:24:42 Egan: do you dig giant robots?
10:26:54 Egan: well no, I guess you dig 200 ton flying bricks and russian paratroopers
10:34:51 syv: Essentially yes.
10:34:58 syv: I'm also doing russian conscripts now.
10:35:28 syv: This contract wants me to have three separately deployed units: attack, defense, and scout.
10:36:01 syv: VDV are on attack, Lotus is on Scout, and the conscripts (no transport, just field guns and footsoldiers) are on Defense.
10:36:21 syv: Lotus just solo'd a mission and got 8 kills. :P
10:37:05 syv: Shot down three enemy planes, and took...
10:37:16 syv: 9 points of damage
10:44:48 Devastator: heh.
10:45:33 Egan: It feels kinda strange that piloting for aerospace and piloting for "conventional aircraft" are different
10:46:25 Egan: I could kinda get that a plane pilot doesn't necesarrly know how to use a spaceplane in orbital combat, but surely the aerospace pilot can pick up using a normal plane
10:46:53 Egan: kinda feels like bloat of vehicle categories, though I kinda get it
11:09:52 syv: I can see it. They're presumably quite different machines.
11:10:15 syv: Though... aerospace straight up gives a penalty to in-atmosphere flight.
11:10:35 syv: So just have one skill and keep the penalty, yeah.
11:10:47 syv: There's apparently prosthetic tails in this game.
11:11:19 syv: They allow infantry to deal more damage to units in the same hex, but... infantry works in platoons of 20-30 guys...?
11:14:43 syv: Monthly salary for combat personnel: 1.4 million c-bills
11:15:09 syv: Monthly payout for contract: 7.2 million
11:15:10 syv: worth
11:16:16 Egan: did you notice the projected profit on the contracts screen?
11:17:14 Egan: comparing how much you get paid (ideally) with how much money you spend monthly (currently, and assuming no casualties)
11:17:43 Egan: a few of my initial ones the number was negative
11:17:59 Egan: though it doesn't count the much less predictable profit of battlefield salvage
11:18:29 syv: Nope
11:19:12 syv: I've also realized that infantry only cost their salaries to hire. Because... they own their own gear.
11:19:22 syv: But you can sell their gear and pocket the money.
11:19:29 Egan: rude
11:19:47 syv: So I don't do that; I only use "remove" to get rid of their gear. They still own it, it's just in storage, I guess.
11:20:03 syv: But this makes conscripts very cheap and absurdly effective for the price.
11:20:24 syv: "Why yes, I will pay you guys 30k a month to use your AC/20"
11:20:31 Egan: I feel like you do half-own the attached gear?
11:20:41 syv: That's not reflected in the cost!
11:20:44 Egan: so you would get half the money for selling
11:21:39 syv: For mechwarriors/pilots/etc, this system works, because when you fire the person they demand to bring along their gear... or a payment equivalent to cost.
11:21:41 Egan: military systems where the soldiers are expected to buy their own weapons do have some advantages :3
11:21:44 syv: But infantry can be sacked.
11:21:56 syv: Without anything.
11:22:24 syv: For mechwarriors you could also cheese the system by keeping their mech, and insisting they become footsoldiers.
11:22:30 syv: Then park them under a fuel-air bomb,
11:22:41 syv: Voila, you are now the 100% owner of a brand new mech.
11:23:00 Egan: this applies only to the personnel market infantry, right? Not buying the gear and then mass-recruiting to fill out the unit?
11:23:08 syv: AFAIK
11:23:25 syv: I haven't unit-bought any infantry
11:25:27 Devastator has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
11:25:54 syv: Infantry who come with gear should really get better pay correlated with the price of said gear.
11:26:39 syv: Regular footsoldier who brought a rifle? Paid ~1k. Regular gunner who brought a fucking AC/20? Also paid ~1k.
11:28:01 Egan: would make sense
11:28:14 Egan: Don't think there's really a way, though
11:30:00 Egan: I guess you could have two different payscales which you set manually by making the more expensive gear troops into officers?
11:40:02 syv: Arguably, but then there's footsoldiers, jump soldiers, mechanised soldiers, field gun soldiers (with guns ranging from AC/2 to AC/20)
11:40:42 syv: Really the fairest way would prolly be to only buy units from unit purchasing, and GM delete the equipment from personnel market troops.
11:42:46 Egan: would make some sense for each platoon to have an actual designated leader who owns the gear for the whole platoon
11:43:39 Egan: that feels like what the personnel market is, you're hiring an existing platoon-strength mercenary outfit with its own command structure
11:44:14 syv: "Do not reassign troops away from their own platoon"
11:44:16 syv: meeeeh
11:44:19 syv: That's no fun.
11:45:16 syv: Still OP anyways, since you can have an AC/20 at like 1/30 the real cost
11:46:01 Egan: that feels like the whole point of the personnel market
11:46:32 Egan: there's a limited and random supply, but you can get your hands on equipment very cheaply by just hiring people who have it
11:46:58 Egan: like it's strong if you hire a 'warrior with a heavy mech too
11:49:51 Egan: the situation where you can end up with their stuff without proper compensation just feels like the game being balanced a little around roleplaying and self-GMing rather than something very tuned
11:50:15 Egan: as evidenced by the fact that you can just, decide how much money you start with. how large a force.
11:50:53 syv: Hm. I suppose.
11:50:53 Egan: the first thing you're shown is a bunch of options which can really really change what the difficulty is
11:51:38 syv: I went with all-default!
11:51:42 syv: And read no documentation.
11:51:53 syv: "Use the formation roles in the Briefing tab to your advantage. Scout allows the formation to check for potential scenarios in adjacent hexes. Fight allows the formation to reinforce with the possibility not adding additional OpFor units when you have no support points. Training allows veteran commanding officers to add XP to ultra-green and green crews under their command on a weekly basis. Defend allows free minefields, provided the formation c
11:51:56 syv: o.O
11:52:46 Egan: ooh, training does something?
11:52:54 Egan: logical, I guess
11:53:05 syv: This is apparently supposed to be for an additional setting they're calling "stratcon"
11:53:18 syv: Which is why he mentioned "adjacent hexes"
11:53:33 Egan: planetary maps?
11:53:53 Egan: or rather operational level maps in general
11:57:28 syv: I guess?
12:12:22 Egan: is that a feature in development I guess?
12:12:40 Egan: the version we're using is a bit old, maybe that already exists
12:12:55 Egan: didn't see any evidence of it in my version
12:37:18 syv: I was quoting a two year old reddit thread
12:37:34 syv: Maybe the feature was *removed*

12:56:06 Egan: oh, there's one tiny little checkbox for it
12:56:35 Egan: "use stratcon campain rules" at the bottom of against the bot tab
12:57:25 syv: lol
12:57:43 syv: "one tiny little checkbox" seems like a theme of megamek
12:59:05 Egan: turning that one adds a new tab in mekhq but activating it mid contrat seems to make that tab think there's no contract
13:13:03 Egan: https://i.postimg.cc/yY7YL4LH/image.png
13:13:27 Egan: this is what you get if you turn on the stratcon thing
13:26:48 syv: Confusing
13:27:24 Egan: that is possibly why it's not on by default!
