08:45:05 Devastator: 'lo
08:50:02 syv: 'lo
08:50:10 syv: Lotta GoD while I slept.
08:50:23 syv: Doesn't quite fit Luna to ask *no* questions, but oh well.
08:52:52 Devastator: Yup.
08:53:00 Devastator: I think I'll move over to the target area before casting stuff.
08:53:12 Devastator: if it wrecks the ground or summons something it'd be better to have it in the right place.
08:53:33 Devastator: same if it blows my legs off.
08:54:05 syv: Reasonable.
08:54:25 syv: I'm going to cast early though, three turns isn't a lot.
08:55:00 Devastator nods.
08:55:13 Devastator: Better to do different things.
08:55:23 syv: Essences seem quite weak.
08:56:54 Devastator: pre-cast spells!
08:56:57 Devastator: I like it.
08:57:00 Devastator: but yeah, it's tricky.
08:57:01 syv: Pre-cast *words*.
08:57:22 syv: It is unclear what they actually do, and they cost a full turn to create.
08:57:46 syv: If they're a significant buff to the word, that might be good. They're useful, I imagine, for low-heart characters.
08:58:15 syv: Heart seems likely to either be added to a base of 1 word per turn, to be the wordcount, or half the wordcount.
08:58:50 syv: In all cases essence is nearly essential for 1 Heart chars.
09:00:10 Devastator: unless you go with 0 heart.
09:00:12 Devastator: but yeah.
09:01:21 Devastator: also if I ko myself punching reflect damage ground or something..
09:01:23 Devastator: well..
09:01:25 Devastator: whoops.
09:01:55 syv: That would be amusing.
09:07:50 Devastator: [1][1]
09:21:28 Devastator: Did read a memoir of a canadian soldier in WWII.
09:21:57 Devastator: it does a good job of establishing why the hell you don't fight canadians in war, while establishing why they don't glorify it.
09:23:11 Devastator: The guy was in the first landings in Sicily, where he descrives how his company made 50 miles on foot in 48 hours while taking 20 prisoners and skirmishing with Germans once.
09:23:52 Devastator: which was necessary because they'd landed in the wrong spot, after someone screwed up the navigation and the platoons had to figure out how to get ashore and in order themselves.
09:25:19 Devastator: and it's all casual. You have to put that together from the description of the individual events.
09:30:25 syv: Posted
09:31:02 syv: That's an impressive story, there.
09:31:58 Devastator: Yeah, there's also a bit where his platoon has to free-climb a ridge to get up a fortress wall to take the germans from the wrong side, where he loses one of his friends.
09:32:31 Devastator: And they had to do it at night to show up at the right hour in the morning to keep the fortress gunners from tearing up a couple of companies who were on the front side.
09:32:43 syv: Damn
09:33:59 Devastator: There's a third one where they have bad intel and are told to outflank some germans. They end up getting behidn them and digging in across a supply road instead, ambushing a convoy and digging in, because their orders aren't relevant to the situation so they just figure out something useful to do.
09:35:01 Devastator: They end up with a lot of wounded, so do a very solid retreat from the position a few days later, after the army is pressing the germsns from the front. They got a mention in German reports as being "Specially trained mountain troops" for that action.
09:35:51 Devastator: Guy was in 7th platoon company C of one of the regiments of 1st Canadian Infantry division, which was a real ujnit that did those things, so..
09:36:36 Devastator: But yeah, the thinking and creativity are very, very obvious.
09:38:12 Devastator: the navigation was basically "We got a free moment because the cruisers just laid down a hell of a barrage, so we need to land now rather than find the right spot."
09:38:41 Devastator: then it was "Well, the paratroops were west of us and this unit was east of us, so we'll spread out until we find at least one guy, who will tell us if we're west or east of where we should be, and then work from there.
09:39:43 Devastator: Turned out to be West, so they went forward until they spotted an objective to their east that matched up with the stuff they'd studied, hence the 50 miles thing.
09:39:56 Devastator: they just thought they had to keep moving until they could link up, no time to stop.
09:40:14 syv: Good soldiers.
09:40:43 Devastator: Yeah. Although there was drill and other stuff, it really was about thinking.
09:41:35 Devastator: He was a subaltern, or an extremely junior officer, but they still had him doing cross-training with other units and that included some air units, where he had to organize both defenses against airplanes and airstrikes against sloppy units.
09:42:09 Devastator: had very general orders to make life hell for any unit on the training ground which was being sloppy as well as to follow orders for air support called in properly.
09:42:50 Devastator: (A now defunct rank below second lieutenant.)
09:43:14 Devastator: Also ordered an airstrike against Churchill by mistake, who was visiting the training camp one day.
09:43:38 Devastator: (He thought the canvoy was sloppy)
09:43:52 Devastator: (Figured out things were really bad when the flak units started firing real shells.)
09:44:07 syv: Hahahaha
09:44:25 Devastator: He got out of it because nobody would believe someone so junior could have caused that screwup, so they looked for the real person in charge of the mistake.
09:46:48 syv: Lucky
09:47:08 Devastator: Nobody got hurt, which always helps in these things.
09:47:12 Devastator: (he called it off really fast.)
09:47:13 syv: Did someone else get blamed?
09:47:19 Devastator: He doesn't say. Maybe.
10:07:08 Devastator: essence is interesting.
10:07:18 Devastator: yeah, I'm not sure how it works. Should be nice to have pre-used spells, though.
10:10:53 Devastator: but you've played peerplexicon.

10:56:33 Devastator: oh, I think Heroic Form might be passive.
10:56:35 Devastator: oops.
10:59:01 syv: It is, heh,
10:59:27 syv: Prepared spells would be very nice. Essence specifies that you choose only one word, though.
11:00:37 syv: "To create an Essence, proceed as though casting a spell, but select only a single Word according to the same requirements, and declare your creation of an Essence. Creating an Essence prevents casting any spells for that [Turn]."
11:01:00 syv: Essences may not be the word chosen. Might just be *related* to it. Or could be an empowered form.
11:01:55 syv: You could make one while doing your punchy, just to try it out.
11:03:05 Devastator: Yeah.
11:03:07 Devastator: I have 1 so.
11:03:19 Devastator: I'll try casting that same word as a spell next turn.
11:13:16 Devastator: 'hate-imbue your spells'
11:15:22 syv: Yeah. Maybe there will be alternate spellcastung methods?
11:15:41 syv: Or maybe it's flavortext.
11:20:33 syv: Power and control affect essences somehow.
11:20:45 syv: So that implies they'll be more than bonus words.
11:23:29 syv: Egan is very fortunate. One of his words is "Gottem"
11:23:36 syv: That seems like his kinda word
11:32:41 Devastator: heh

23:48:56 ER: not really a fan of sy switching off of heroic form
23:49:36 ER: because as a magical researcher build with 0 might I'm more likely to survive to get useful if more of the team can fight at the start :p
23:55:20 Devastator: mmm
23:55:46 Devastator: Heh
