04:23:31 Devastator: mmm.
05:04:32 syv has joined #einsteinianroulette
05:05:56 Devastator: heyo.
05:06:00 syv: heyo.
05:06:06 syv: :(
05:08:57 Devastator: :(?
05:11:28 syv: Too many crappy things
05:11:39 syv: I don't want to think about them enough to describe them
05:14:01 Devastator: mmm.
05:14:03 Devastator: fair 'nuff.
05:18:07 Devastator: Extinction's prolly another day.
05:18:13 syv: Okay
05:18:14 Devastator: but can chat about what to sell.
05:18:23 Devastator: the Stolen Goods, obv.
05:18:46 syv: I very nearly went back on selling, to instead do something that might make us more money. More efficient.
05:19:07 syv: ...But I think getting an upgrade here will probably be one of the most impactful times in the game.
05:19:41 syv: Getting out of Tulia in good shape is probably going to be hard, and *important*, while the rest of the game will have more time to prepare. I think.
05:24:18 Devastator: What do you mean by good shape?
05:26:17 syv: "Without restarting and with a good Alice"
05:26:26 Devastator: Ahh.
05:26:38 Devastator: Yeah, that's certainly possible. I'm not sure as to how hard it is.
05:26:39 syv: Though I suppose from what you've said, all the Alices are good
05:26:47 syv: Either mechanically good or narratively good
05:27:02 Devastator: Yeah I mean, I'm not going to saddle you with an Alice I hate.
05:27:11 Devastator: or that I think you will hate.
05:27:12 syv: I imagine it's more likely to be hard than Arc III?
05:28:44 Devastator: There's some challenge in Act III.
05:28:59 Devastator: It might not have the driving force of the army after you, but not everything you'll have to do is easy.
05:31:16 Devastator: It's mostly freeform, but there's still one or two things that really should happen, if you want to have a real chance to win.
05:32:09 syv: Mmm
05:32:29 syv: Maybe.
05:33:10 syv: The other thought is about setting up an Alice. Visiting the magic university so that whatever Alice might be there has a better relationship with us.
05:33:26 syv: Factionally, at least
05:33:38 Devastator: Oh, there's some fun stuff there.
05:33:44 syv: But that feels a bit too blind for my taste.
05:34:04 Devastator: (I hate to spoil it, but Alice isn't there. If Alice were there, she'd be off fighting somewhere at this particular time.)
05:36:06 Devastator: (But, you know.. you might meet someone who that hypothetical Alice knows..)
05:36:22 syv: Yeah, factionally.
05:36:48 syv: I know we won't meet Alice--any Alice--before joining up with her. That would disrupt the quantum superposition of the name.
05:37:25 syv: But if there's a mage Alice, fair shot she's factionally aligned with that place, and if we make them happy, more chance we keep their Alice.
05:38:07 syv: Thing is, we're guanteed *a* Alice, and I don't feel strongly enough about having a mage Alice that trying to help get her is worth going out of our way for
05:40:12 Devastator: I could drop the Alice guarantee. Have you guys hunt up a fourth member if you miss a third one.
05:40:33 Devastator: And you could meet Alice. I don't name most of the people you meet.
05:41:19 Devastator: but yeah, that's some understandable logic.
05:45:43 Devastator: Act IV will probably be short compared to the other three.
05:46:51 Devastator: III could be quite long.
05:48:03 syv: Yes. IV is more of a climax.
05:51:26 Devastator: although there's post-game.
06:01:54 Devastator: Had a rough war in DW.
06:03:32 syv: Mm
06:03:55 Devastator: Enemy had a lot more ships than anticipated.
06:04:04 Devastator: and I need to upgrade my starbases.
06:04:08 Devastator: they're a little too fragile.
06:04:15 Devastator: well, and weak.
06:04:33 Devastator: got out of it, but went 2-1 on terms of planets won.
06:04:41 Devastator: I took two, they took one.
06:07:19 Devastator: I also had to bribe a huge pirate faction with 60,000 a year to get them off my back.
06:23:32 syv: Who's winning?
06:30:47 Devastator: I am, but it's very much not a walkoer.
06:37:52 Devastator: oh, ended the war, actually. Captured a mining base so I could sell it back for the peace treaty.
06:38:28 Devastator: I'll be back at it soon, or fighitng the doom pirates.
06:41:35 Devastator: they still have three bases with 6000+ firepower in each. I don't know if blowing those up is going to be possible at all.
06:41:57 Devastator: that's basically two fleets of 24 warships to equal offensive capability.
06:49:25 syv: And stronger defenses, I presume?
06:49:34 Devastator: Very much so.
06:49:54 Devastator: mostly with the basic issue of 'you have to deal 11,000 damage to get through shields.'
06:50:15 Devastator: whereas the station might be able to one-shot attacking ships, reducing the firepower against it.
06:50:39 syv: Is there subsystem damage? Or does the station have full firepower until it blows up?
06:52:00 Devastator: Some weapons can bypass certain types of defenses.
06:52:30 Devastator: gravity weapons ignore all defenses, for instance.
06:52:40 Devastator: But gravity weapons are weaker against large targets.
06:57:49 Devastator: It won't have full HP until it blows up, but it'll take system damage after shields and armour plating.
06:59:24 Devastator: I don't know exactly how strong it is that way, but it probably has at least 2000 HP worth of armour, which takes about 5-6k damage to burn through, after the shields. After that it's about 10 HP to break each component, which is probably another 3k.. which goes quickly.
06:59:47 Devastator: it's really rare to have a big station like that survive to taking component damage without being destroyed.
07:02:11 syv: So yeah, hugely advantaged versus a fleet
07:02:31 Devastator: well, fleets can run away.
07:02:55 Devastator: and if I built a fleet loaded with heavy ion cannons it'd get wrecked, thinking about it.
07:03:54 Devastator: those temporarily disable components, concentrating on engines. On a station, they prioritize hitting reactors, but hit all powered components.
07:04:21 Devastator: it probably doesn't have more than thirty reactors, so if I build a fleet with sixty or so ion cannons, it might disable the station.
07:05:09 Devastator: Trouble is if it's got fighter bays (which are unaffected), or concussion missiles (which are very energy-efficient). Probably not much of the latter, but it should have plenty of the former.
07:06:33 Devastator: Mmm, then the issue is if there's ships escorting it. Which there probably will be, it's a pirate base, so there will be pirate ships. But yeah, two ion cannon fleets could beat a base with strong weaponry like that. I don't think the AI will build enough ion defenses into its stations to protect against that.
07:06:40 Devastator: it'll probably have one, but one won't do it.
07:09:24 syv: So... will you try and crack the pirates?
07:10:03 Devastator: I'll stop paying them, and take out some of their ships, along with a bunch of their mining stations.
07:10:11 Devastator: but no, I won't crack that home system.
07:10:42 Devastator: I have a spy with +50% sabotage. I'll get him up one more level and then have him take coinflip odds at blowing one of them up.
07:11:31 Devastator: I also need to decommission the repaired tech bonus ships I've found. They're still better than what I can build, but they have design issues that make them bad fleet units.
07:11:49 Devastator: They use a hyperdrive with a max speed of 17.5k, when I use hyperdrives with a max speed of 30k.
07:14:34 syv: Powerful but slow?
07:18:06 Devastator: Well, they're more powerful, but if the fleet moves at half speed to get anywhere...
07:18:09 Devastator: it's not that beneficial.
07:18:23 Devastator: What I need are my own fleet leaders, along with fleet targetting systems and countermeasures.
07:41:18 syv: Garrison ships, then?
07:43:48 Devastator: hmm?
07:44:33 Devastator: (I don't have the tech for fleet targetting systems or countermeasures.)
07:44:55 Devastator: They're cheap and easily available.
07:46:31 Devastator: I'll pick them up after I unlock all the second-tier engines so my cashed-in ships count towards a better tech.
