00:24:02 Piecewise: Patients ain't gonna irradiate themselves
04:03:45 Devastator: Yeah, you gotta zap them.
04:03:51 Devastator: anyway, I think I have a proper character concept for Mook.
04:04:18 Devastator: get a batch of small furry robots as pets. Like a robot squirrel squadron. Have like tiny knives or whatever built into them.
04:04:33 Devastator: get them to attack a smell or a colour or something, and shoot people with a small paintball gun.
04:04:57 Devastator: keep a little pocket override that can be used to stop them, so I get a save in case of critfail.
04:05:23 Devastator: and get someone to program a control set into a VR helmet so I can use one as a scout or something.
04:05:52 Devastator: most of it would take programming work, but could maybe talk researchers, and it might be cost-effective that way. A killer squirrel program could be cheap when done for like fifteen squirrels.
04:25:46 Piecewise: I don't know how well it will compare to a gun

04:26:56 syv: Hey,
Piecewise. Call of Earth when?
04:29:16 Devastator: It'll be inferior to gun, but everyone has gun.
04:29:20 Devastator: need something to differentiate myself.
04:30:27 Devastator: truth is, it's mostly so I can have a method where I pawn off the difficult rolls, like programming them, to ones doable before the mission.
04:30:37 Devastator: so I can have stuff that works without maxing that stat.
04:33:03 Piecewise: Hey
sy. Last Mook mission was me testing out ideas for open world
04:33:17 Piecewise: still working on it, though school kind of slowed me down a fair bit
04:33:36 Devastator: I mean, if I get gun, it'll be three missions before getting a d12, and then I'd need armour to stand in the line.
04:33:54 Devastator: just way too much to catch up on. With weird stuff I can make some use of it early on, and then it'll be different later on.
04:34:39 Devastator: I mean, I'd get to stand next to your char, or
RC, and do what they do but far worse.
04:35:53 syv: Yeah, I recall you saying Detroit was a test for CoE. Which is why I'm asking; I've been looking forward to CoE for -awhile-
04:35:57 Devastator: besides, if I build it right I might get to have like 10 or 12 guaranteed damage, which could be pretty reliable.
04:36:02 syv: Will it be before Elden Ring? :<
04:37:23 Piecewise: Probably not. I'm a bit flummoxed with the system and don't want to spend hundreds of hours making a setting only for the player count to drop to 2
04:38:09 Piecewise: I have enough setting to go for a while though I just need to figure out how the hell to make it not a chore to explore
04:39:22 Piecewise: MIA was all about forward movement in terms of the actual story, though the entire setup is people going in and out
04:39:38 Piecewise: I don't think players will like going in and out over and over
04:40:11 Piecewise: even with the environment system designed to produce different encounters
04:51:02 GameServ:
Devastator rolled 1d10: 4 <Total: 4>
04:54:56 Piecewise: Well, had to kick oz from discord today
04:55:33 Piecewise: first person I unironically kicked. Kicked people a couple times as a joke but he was going real GWG
04:58:57 syv: Yeah, Oz is... not a great individual.
04:59:21 syv: I forget whether or not I banned him here. Might've not, just because it's so easy to get around IRC bans.
05:00:06 syv: If you want help with the system, that *is* my specialty. :3
05:00:30 syv: Could do some small scale private tests, see how it rolls out, and then adjust.
05:04:58 Piecewise: I suppose the issue isn't the mechanics so much as...what to do
05:05:47 Piecewise: How to give direction, how to make expeditions not seem like a chore when it comes to heading back or whatever
05:06:12 Piecewise: Because realistically you don't want to just wave your hands and say everyone got back
05:06:34 Piecewise: I tried to get around that with some Dark Souls style short cuts, but its still not perfect
05:07:10 syv: Do you have a good progression system? A way for players to feel rewarded, ideally without becoming OP?
05:10:03 Piecewise: A few things really. Mapping, cataloging/ capturing flora and fauna, artifact gathering, etc
05:10:58 Piecewise: Surgical implants, mutations, and such as physical progression
05:11:31 syv: Artifacts seem good. A lot of potential for tools that aren't passive.
05:11:58 syv: Are you using a mutations system anything like those in WIZARDS/Infinite Kowloon?
05:14:23 syv: Maybe for traveling, you could have a system that tracks "security" of paths? With actions taking place on those paths improving their security. Make it so you plot a route back, and a roll happens at every segment of the path, with higher security reducing the chance of an encounter?
05:14:46 syv: That would naturally mean areas which are seen more often become less likely to have stuff happen, so will get skipped more often.
05:15:36 syv: Hm, could have the issue of players just pounding out a safe path, too... though I'm unsure how bad that would be, necessarily.
05:16:52 syv: Some kinda random events that draw attention to certain areas, with promises of rewards, would help a lot with that. Especially if it's interesting to plot a route through known areas, to a new point of interest.
05:17:13 syv: I'm guessing you already came up with something like that, judging by the weapon drops in Detroit
05:19:27 Piecewise: The paths idea is a good one I think, though more likely than not it would be more of a 'We learned the dangers and how to avoid them" than "We made it safe"
05:19:39 Piecewise: You don't really make it safe in there without some serious work
05:20:04 Piecewise: But maybe visiting areas and exploring them would make movement through them in the future safer
05:25:31 syv: It's also make for a nice general goal.
05:26:20 syv: If you set it up so there's better and worse paths, that could even work well as a generic goal. "Find a better path farther down"
05:27:02 syv: Is it a vertical cylinder, or more linear? More open?
05:29:00 syv: ...Repeated myself above. I meant a good goal for a mission--if a player needs direction, they can just get a mission to explore virtually any difficulty level location wirh the excuse of "find a better path through/see if it's better than the path we have"
05:31:24 Piecewise: I have the idea of a sort of quest board giving goals as well
05:31:48 Piecewise: Since the players are explorers, there would be people who want specific things to be done
05:33:01 syv: I think that alone would improve things a lot over Cabal. Dunno what to do? Look at tasks, do quest, get reward.
05:33:31 syv: If the quests are tied to the gameworld, it'll give a good sense of progression beyond even personal character growth.
05:33:34 Piecewise: As per map shape, it is a pit, but with layers
05:33:40 Piecewise: some larger, some smaller
05:34:07 syv: That just needs... like, a good crunch system for encounters, I guess? And there, I have *no idea* what you're doing, or what would be good.
05:34:39 Piecewise: I should probably do a small scale test
05:36:55 Piecewise: My school ends this week and I'll be spending the holidays at my sister's house. Maybe I can try and get something together by the new year.
05:37:07 Piecewise: At least a system and small area to test
05:37:28 syv: Please try! I'd love to get a peak

07:49:25 Devastator: (I figure it'd be more likely to be in a vault.
07:49:43 syv: Yeah, that'd have been an awful mistake.
07:50:08 syv: Pity. Either way, it'd have been better to keep and identify.
07:50:23 syv: Didn't even oneshot the archer group!
07:52:24 Devastator: it was terrain-based damage.
07:52:30 Devastator: 'Grass' isn't the best terrain.
07:53:32 Devastator: anyway, you can probably reproduce them if you work at it.
08:01:36 Devastator: make more terrain damage vials.
08:02:07 Devastator: it's up to you if it involves any messy business. ;-p

09:09:12 ER: I dreamed that I used some kind of wall mounted machine and gave it some of my blood to make a mystery gizmo. which was just a flimsy black plastic box with a little button on it
09:09:45 ER: then something killed me but before dying I pressed the button and saw that it gave the enemy a red weapon bugg
09:11:28 syv: That'd be a neat enemy. One which, if not killed but reduced to critical health, will suicidally explode with a spell that both damages and buffs you. Giving a motivation to leave it alive at low health, sometimes.
09:36:51 ER: I'd like to say that in call of earth it'd be really cool to set up deep outposts as a way to make certain paths safer, but
PW doesn't seem to think outposts should be a thing.
09:37:13 ER: perhaps the whole place is too roadside picnic for anybody to be able to stay there
09:39:27 Devastator: maybe it rearranges itself.
10:09:25 Devastator: Yes, that would be her.
10:11:53 Devastator: "Hi, I have waaay too many HP and I hit like two trucks."
10:13:55 Devastator: not the cloak she's named after?
10:14:19 ER: double slash, one for each leg
10:14:20 Devastator: I mean, hell, they have an artifact each.
10:14:27 syv: Yeah, need to take her cloak and give it to Sessha.
10:14:38 syv: What DOES her cloak do, though?
10:14:42 Devastator: Oh, my sweet summer child..
10:14:57 Devastator: her mutlihit attack is a proper hit group.
10:15:51 syv: Willis has a hitgroup that's not even tiring. It's meh.
10:16:33 Devastator: Yeah, it's been too long since you've faced her.
10:17:15 syv: Note, I wasn't even actively participating at the time.
10:17:54 Devastator: well, her hitgroup hits about as hard as the three light lancers do, if each one of them hit every target.
10:18:21 Devastator: Carina is the team's DPS.
10:18:37 syv: Is that hitgroup skill sourced from her cloak...?
10:18:52 Devastator: Man, this is impressive.
10:19:07 Devastator: the cloak is basically just three magic items together.
10:19:35 syv: She's strong and hits hard, it's what I'd expect of a maxed DPS unit.
10:19:54 Devastator: nah, I'm just going to watch this play out.
10:20:35 Devastator: I'll tell you what the cloak does if you get it.
10:21:22 Devastator: aight, fair enough.
10:22:02 syv: I recall it summoned a snake, which seems kinda underwhelming. I guess if that's an every-battle ability it's pretty nice.
10:22:27 syv: I recall noticing that it mentioned a clasp, which sounded like a paired item... but that would still imply a second boon on top of snake.
10:22:54 syv: But there didn't seem to be anything else obviously sourced from the cloak? Resistances that we didn't see, maybe?
10:23:44 Devastator: it's an accessory that has three effects. One is simply a bonus accessory slot, so the cloak is basically a free item. Second is it stores three spells in one go. One of them can be contigency to get a multi-spell contigency, or it can be used to cast all three spells at once. The third is indeed less visible benefits.
10:25:57 syv: So the cloak held her berserk effect?
10:26:19 Devastator: yeah, it was Contigency casting berzerk and the snake summon.
10:27:14 syv: So the clasp had a non-snek effect
10:28:45 Devastator: Do note that in her intro I did not give her her normal actions on that same turn.
10:28:55 Devastator: normally she'd take two actions at the same time as getting that effect.
10:30:39 syv: Sessha with spell storing would be kinda meh, honestly. She doesn't know Contingency, so it's just a triple cast... which would be her most powerful move, but once a battle?
10:30:48 syv: Does it preserve mana over multiple days?
10:31:02 syv: Would Willis with Carina's cloak be a MIRV?
10:31:30 Devastator: no, it doesn't save mana or preserve spells a long time, hence her choice of berzerk and summon snake on the boat.
10:31:40 Devastator: she has those spells natively.
10:32:15 syv: It'd bw awesome if Willis could triple cast absolute zero
10:32:25 syv: "Hi, Spar. Do you have cold immunity?"
10:32:39 syv: "Then it doesn't matter. Goodbye."
10:32:49 Devastator: umm, lemme do the math on that.
10:33:01 syv: Assuming Meditation applies too.
10:33:08 Devastator: It wouldn't, actually.
10:33:14 Devastator: it'd trigger on the first spell.
10:33:21 Devastator: but not the next two.
10:33:36 Devastator: but I should do the math on it, I'm not sure if that'd one shot her.
10:33:48 Devastator: it's a pile of damage but she's tough.
10:34:11 syv: If Willis were level 15, would that change?
10:34:18 Devastator: need to do the math.
10:34:38 Devastator: It would, actually.
10:35:16 Devastator: Med Absolute Zero + Absolute Zero + Absolute Zero is about 50% overkill.
10:35:37 ER: just chug potions mid cloakcast
10:35:57 Devastator: That said, her gear on the boat had no cold resistance.
10:36:19 Devastator: If she had one rank it'd about zero her HP, and I'd need to look at it more carefully to determine if she's down or just up.
10:36:31 Devastator: two ranks and she'd be Badly Wounded.
10:37:11 Devastator: I would expect in the party fight Dorren will have everyone with an Elemental Shield.
10:37:17 Devastator: Willis does a ton of damage.
10:37:28 Devastator: Trence is also scary.
10:37:50 Devastator: granting a bonus rank. He did that in his encounter, so you can probably expect that to be in the party fight.
10:38:19 syv: If Willis had a crossbow, would that disable his hitgroup?
10:38:24 Devastator: I mean, the kid wouldn't be that scary if he couldn't turn into a wide range of brokenly powerful forms.
10:38:33 Devastator: It wouldn't, actually.
10:38:41 Devastator: he'd have to reload it next round, but it would work.
10:58:12 Devastator: that said, it's possible I might chang emy mind and grant Willis a replacement skill.
11:24:42 syv: Apparently in 1969 they experimented with 50 BMG flechette rounds which could go through two feet of concrete.
11:26:17 syv: Interestingly, they had a muzzle velocity a bit below 1400 m/s, which is close to where projectiles tend to top out, from my memory.
11:27:17 syv: Sadly, it was one flechette per cartridge. They don't seem to have tried to make multiple, creating long range anti-materiel shotgun flechette cartridges.
11:27:30 syv: Which is logical. That's a bad idea.
11:27:50 syv: It's cool enough that I'm putting it in Nyafor
11:28:15 syv: Actually, I think cats would. It's mechanically actually a good idea... if you use it with their AMR.
11:28:32 syv: And really need ridiculous AP in CQC.
11:33:47 Devastator: Arity understood that.
12:06:15 ER: let's see, should I stop mindlessly switching between different website now?
12:07:06 ER: let's see, get a drink, then play shadow tactics?
12:15:19 ER: hooray for irish breakfast tea
12:18:45 ER: hmm, voices in english or japanese. important choice. :p
12:19:23 syv: English, because there's unsubtitled speech.
12:28:14 ER: running counter of how long it's been since I've saved
12:28:22 ER: which is both reassuring and stressful :p
12:35:13 syv: Yeah this is a game where you want to save A LOT
12:35:51 ER: how unfair. the enemies don't get to save
12:39:11 ER: yeah, showing how samurai dude is useful by having him kill three dudes at once in a cutscene
12:40:42 ER: you know, I can appreciate a game which gets to the point quickly
12:42:20 syv: The first level is really rather difficult for a tutorial level.
12:43:00 ER: might have been harder if I weren't familiar with the gameplay though
12:45:04 ER: oh wait, the map just got bigger :p
12:45:10 ER: the real dark souls starts here
12:47:49 syv: The segment where two strawhats guard a door was where I tripped up. Got seen and backup enemies started pouring out.
12:58:29 ER: oh, he can kill two dudes, and carry two dudes
13:14:25 syv: Best distraction skill AND best attacks
13:15:05 ER: you know I'm gonna hoard the hell out of those bullets
13:16:50 syv: You can get more, and bullets are best used through a level.
13:17:11 syv: Just removing a single unit of five can -substantially- simplify an area.
13:20:50 ER: huh, I moused over a random civilian doctor, who has a name
13:22:03 syv: Actually, no. A lot of random characters are named after staff, as easter eggs.
13:26:58 ER: was having trouble finding a way, but then I figured out I could snipe something to kill three guys
13:27:06 ER: and the game didn't tell me to do that

13:48:42 syv: That's mostly how the game goes.

13:49:12 ER: also, no giving commands while paused
13:49:22 ER: shadow mode is just a queue
13:57:05 syv: Pretty much the most useful char, IMO.
13:57:25 syv: The slow drag is actually very good. Because she's crouched when dragging.
14:12:23 syv: Does she say that when murdering people?
14:12:52 ER: ...but that whole objective is murdering people
14:16:39 syv: ...Does it use the same voice lines for moving when dragging a corpse?
14:17:18 syv: All the characters struck me as a bit psychotic.
14:19:05 syv: Even more psychotic than normal.
14:19:10 ER: darn, making an accident and then setting a trap on the body wasn't sneaky enough
14:20:43 syv: There's a level where you have to sneak through an *allied* war encampment to tell your faction's leader something or other... and you can murder every soldier and civilian in the place without any penalty whatsoever. All of them being your allies, who just don't realize you aren't enemy ninja.
14:21:48 syv: And you can do it with that girl happily chatting about how fun this is, and the ninja guy smugly commenting on his own prowess.
14:40:07 Piecewise: Heading out into the snow, back this afternoon
