02:59:16 Piecewise: I'll be out of town soon and thus not on here or discord for weeks at a time
03:00:49 Devastator: off to the other desert?
03:04:22 Piecewise: bodies to dispose of again
03:04:36 Piecewise: gotta go plant them skeletons
03:04:38 ER: well, you know that we love when you're not around
03:05:19 Piecewise: Is it a funeral when I bury them in a forgotten lava tube somewhere outside flagstaff?
03:05:54 Piecewise: I guess its a funeral like throwing a body off a ship is "Burial at sea"
03:06:17 Devastator: at least the cops are distracted at the moment, so should be good.
03:08:35 Piecewise: And yes
ER, I know you and your lot will finally have your fun
03:29:12 Piecewise: Chaz had its 5th shooting tonight. Another "Peaceful protestor" killed.
03:29:25 Piecewise: They called the cops but then didn't let them in
03:30:03 Piecewise: ah, I hope someone does timeline or history of this once its done, if thats even possible
03:30:27 Piecewise: would be quite interesting
03:31:54 Piecewise: wait, according to some info it was "CHAZ security" that did the shooting?
03:32:53 Piecewise: they apparently opened fire on an SUV they thought might be dangerous, killed the driver and then hit the passenger with an ice axe
03:33:35 Devastator: Not surprised to hear about that.
03:33:46 Devastator: I mean, they could talk about ignoring bounties on american troops..
03:33:52 Devastator: nah, they'll clear it out soon enough.
03:36:27 Devastator: did come up with the date it hit his breiefing today, which makes it harder to say "I never saw it."
03:37:09 Devastator: I do think they should clear them out in the Chaz, though. It's ok until there's a shooting.
03:40:35 Piecewise: 5th one now. Not sure how many fatalities. 2 at least.
03:40:57 Devastator: been following more hardcore right-wingers for comparison.
03:41:13 Devastator: been talking about "43!!!!1!!!!" shootings in Chicago last weekend.
03:41:55 Devastator: tempted to compare it to, say, 1986.
03:42:09 Piecewise: Crime in general has been going down
03:42:34 Devastator: hence why I'm tempted.
03:42:46 Devastator: not even sure if that's right in itself.
03:43:19 Piecewise: but 43 in a single weekend does sound high
03:43:22 Piecewise: maybe in like a week
03:43:29 Devastator: that might be the source, actually.
03:44:02 Piecewise: 43 shootings of one kind or another in a week is certainly high but doesn't seem unreasonable
03:44:14 Devastator: Chicago is Cook County, right?
03:45:47 Piecewise: been 60 years since I was there last
03:46:29 Devastator: 543 homicides in 2015.
03:47:26 Devastator: looks like several thousand a year.
03:47:40 Devastator: which is about 40-50 a week.
03:47:52 Piecewise: Looks like 63 shootings, 16 fatalities in the weekend
03:48:09 Piecewise: so yeah, thats pretty damn high
03:49:04 Devastator: hmm, that's a higher ratio of shootings to fatalities.
03:49:49 Piecewise: they're making it seem almost random
03:50:30 Devastator: yeah, it seems to be highly variable with incomplete stats.
03:50:41 Devastator: plus I'm getting that the county may not actually be that much of the city.
03:51:44 Piecewise: So why are people quoting the number of shootings in Chicago?
03:52:46 Devastator: BLUE CITIES ARE UNSAFE HELLSCAPES! TAKE MATTERS INTO YOUR OWN HANDS!
03:53:30 Devastator: talked with a guy who was proud he'd never been in a big city in the last twenty years, yet was absolutely certain they were horrible deathworlds.
03:54:05 Devastator: anyway, cook county looks big enough, but yeah, these statistics are crap.
03:54:37 Piecewise: such thoughts are not uncommon
03:54:58 Piecewise: I know a lot of canadians think similar things about american cities and healthcare and such
03:55:02 Devastator: but being completely certain that you know something to be true, of which you have absolutely no experience with..
03:55:34 Devastator: I'd take it currently over down there on Covid..
03:55:46 Devastator: but you were making some good arguments earlier.
03:55:53 Piecewise: I'm gonna look up a list of the most dangerous cities and see their break down.
03:56:02 Piecewise: I'd bet its about even honestly
03:56:08 Devastator: Half of south america, probably.
03:56:39 Devastator: I live in what isn't far from the most dangerous city in Canada.
03:56:48 Devastator: was for a good number of years running.
03:58:59 Devastator: crime rate here is a bit less than double the national average.
04:03:04 IronyOwl: thing is, double a nice country's crime/murder rate still isn't all that high
04:03:29 IronyOwl: some places are just absolute abattoirs, at least for those involved in the local festivities
04:03:44 Devastator: Hard to get an exact number, but it looks like doubling the murder rate brings it noticeably under the US average.
04:05:00 Piecewise: running through the "Top 25 most dangerous american cities"
04:05:08 Piecewise: so far, not looking good for democrats
04:05:37 Devastator: poor people do more crime.
04:05:43 Devastator: poor people vote more democrat.
04:05:55 IronyOwl: actually, funny thing
04:06:04 Devastator: except in some parts of the south.
04:06:09 IronyOwl: I've heard that the US murder rate isn't actually any higher than normal for most areas
04:06:18 IronyOwl: it's a handful of really, REALLY hot places that spike the national average
04:06:29 Devastator: that sounds hard to prove.
04:07:15 Devastator: besides, a list of 'top 200 american cities' is what, 160 democratic mayors? Gotta pro-rate for that.
04:07:50 IronyOwl: well, depends on what your point is
04:08:17 Devastator: I'm just annoyed that I can't get that article to load.
04:10:45 Devastator: annoying. Their normal articles load fine, showing me the top rank for 2020 is Thompson, Manitoba.
04:12:07 Devastator: Never been there myself.
04:12:16 Devastator: looks like a small city in northern Manitoba.
04:12:35 IronyOwl: weird place for a high murder rate?
04:12:58 Devastator: Looks vaguely similar to my home city, but about a fifth the size.
04:13:16 Devastator: not really. Low economic opportunity, lots of boredrom.
04:14:39 Devastator: also, lots of temporary workers and such, so more people than the official population.
04:15:32 Devastator: I know there's about another couple thousand people in PG who live there but don't live there, just fill the hotels. Not to mention camp workers and such, who are in town a lot but live elsewhere.
04:15:56 Devastator: they might be from, say, New Westminister, but they're in town for the next six months or a year.
04:16:10 Devastator: so probably a good number of those too.
04:16:17 Devastator: plus, more relatively young people.
04:16:40 Devastator: all of which adds up.
04:16:59 IronyOwl: a mining town in 2020 sounds like a pretty rough place to try to make a living
04:17:00 Devastator: nah, looking at Thompson, it's not a surprising answer.
04:17:08 Piecewise: so out of 25 of the most dangerous cities
04:17:19 Piecewise: 25 of them are democrat
04:17:31 Devastator: What's the size cutoff?
04:18:17 IronyOwl: ah, this is all violent crime
04:18:28 IronyOwl: I saw different charts for murder only, and it was slightly better
04:19:06 IronyOwl: when I say slightly better I mean 1 Rep and 3 independents out of 20 in the gross murder rate, and 1 independent in the murder/capita top 20
04:20:58 Devastator: Beaumont Texas seems to have a non-aligned government..
04:22:16 Devastator: just checking the start of the list.
04:23:37 Devastator: partly because i haven't heard of the place.
04:23:37 IronyOwl: apparently the murdery-est country in the world is El Salvador
04:23:51 IronyOwl: with 52 homicides per 100,000 people each year
04:24:13 IronyOwl: put another way 0.05% of the population is murdered each year
04:24:30 Devastator: now that's a high rate.
04:24:43 IronyOwl: like I said, some places are just holy shit
04:24:46 Devastator: also, statewise it looks like 13 red states to 12 blue ones, fwiw.
04:24:57 IronyOwl: now that's interesting
04:26:18 Devastator: It's also weird to see party affiliations for mayors in any case.
04:26:36 IronyOwl: you think that's weird
04:26:44 Devastator: no such thing here.
04:26:57 Devastator: I thought most judges are at least officially non-aligned in the states.
04:27:24 Devastator: hell, with one exception provincial parties aren't the same as the federal ones.
04:27:40 IronyOwl: actually... I'm trying to remember if judges list their party affiliation on the ballot and I'm not sure
04:28:09 IronyOwl: but yeah I dunno how we ended up with this two-party sham, but it's in there deep
04:28:36 Devastator: gotta fix it from the bottom, not the top.
04:29:34 Devastator: That's something missing from the wikipedia page about Little Rock, Arkansas.
04:29:38 Devastator: see if you can spot it.
04:31:17 Piecewise: I was going by Mayor political affiliation since that's what trump denoted it on.
04:33:04 Devastator: still want to see a list of exactly how many R mayors there are in cities over 100k..
04:35:59 Devastator: browsing this list, I see one in the top 25.
04:36:38 Devastator: next one is Fresno at 34.
04:37:08 Devastator: looks like it gets more common below there.
04:38:08 Devastator: also, Raleigh NC should be on that list.
04:38:13 IronyOwl: according to this it's about 1:2
04:38:26 Devastator: (the list of top 25)
04:39:09 Devastator: that'd put it in 4th.
04:39:43 Devastator: being dumb, read a total.
04:40:52 Devastator: also, I missed san deigo, which makes me an idiot.
04:46:27 Devastator: also, yay, this loaded.
04:46:44 Devastator: I'm amazed they found a shot of Rupert where it isn't raining.
04:47:27 Devastator: Penticton is crazytown, no surprise there.
04:47:39 Devastator: Port Alberni is a surprise, though.
04:48:38 IronyOwl: so what was missing from little rock, arkansas?
04:48:39 Devastator: been there. It's incredibly quiet.
04:49:41 Devastator: Langley.. yeah, lots of drugs.
04:49:55 Devastator: Lethbridge is a pretty rough town too.
04:50:30 Devastator: Lloydminister.. yeah.
04:50:38 Devastator: Terrace, surprised it isn't even higher.
04:50:56 Devastator: That's a tough place to grow up in.
04:51:06 Devastator: Just nothing to do.
04:51:19 Devastator: Red deer's pretty rough.
04:51:43 Devastator: Grand Prarie's a big square box out on the high plains where you're basically locked inside for five months and working your ass off all the time.
04:52:13 Devastator: Never been to Selkirk, but I've heard of it.
04:52:46 Devastator: Williams Lake, that's where they had to evac the whole town due to the wildfires a couple years ago. Also lots of huge pot grow-ops.
04:53:03 Devastator: Prince Albert's another rough town.
04:54:24 Devastator: Wetaskawin is basically hickville, Canada.
04:54:38 Devastator: it's like Penticton but turned up to 11.
04:56:43 Devastator: Quesnel, well, they closed the mill there, and it was never the most propserous place. I'll have to look at the breakdown.
04:57:25 Devastator: we checked Thompson, and the last entry is North Battleford.
04:58:34 Devastator: I haven't been there, so I'll hold off on it, but I've heard about the crime there before reading that.
04:59:14 Devastator: Really surprised Terrace isn't higher on the list. That's not a happy place to live.
05:00:14 syv has joined #einsteinianroulette
05:00:38 Devastator: I suppose that's the different PoV here, then. The worse crime rates in Canada are all fairly small centres that mostly, but not entirely, lean conservative.
05:00:57 Devastator: (Port Alberni is very left-wing, for instance.)
05:01:36 syv: I plugged 0.05% into anydice real quick, 'cause that's what I do instead of thinking nowadays, it said that you get a 97% chance of never rolling that chance over sixty rolls.
05:01:39 Devastator: although Penticton and Wetaskawin are extremely similar places with opposite politics. ;-p
05:01:55 syv: Which honestly seems kinda low for the worst city?
05:02:12 Devastator: 3% of the population gets murdered?
05:02:13 syv: Average person has only 3% chance of being murdered before they're sixty!
05:02:15 Devastator: that seems pretty big.
05:02:34 syv: But it also seems pretty good for the worst place
05:02:52 ER: your average character in our games has a 16% chance to get killed walking down the street
05:03:07 syv: That's less likely than rolling 1 on 1d20
05:03:13 Devastator: I'd expect the real worst place to be things like places under active genocide.
05:03:27 syv: Well, yes, but that's a bit different
05:03:30 Devastator: or places like Haiti during the last revolution.
05:03:40 syv: That's systemic murder, which is different from casual domestic murder
05:04:04 syv: Hum, that'd be interesting. Finding the place that over the last sixty years has had the highest murder rate
05:04:20 syv: So including unusually bad times and events
05:04:43 Devastator: highest odds of dying violently?
05:04:58 Devastator: my guess would be Cambodia.
05:05:02 ER: where's the latest place the us military did something
05:05:14 Devastator: they're still doing stuff all over the place.
05:05:18 syv: Let's blame the Russian military
05:05:55 Devastator: eh, they do lots of stuff too. ;-p
05:06:11 syv: It's weird using a PC app for IRC.
05:06:13 Devastator: but yeah, cambodian genocide.
05:06:26 Devastator: they aren't apps unless they're on mobile devices.
05:06:28 syv: It feels like y'all are talking through a tinny microphone or something
05:06:33 syv: Shush, it's an application.
05:07:00 ER: that's my natural perception of you guys
05:07:08 Devastator: killed so many people.
05:07:31 syv: Welp, I guess that's just what people sound like through Hydra's terminal
05:09:32 ER: anyway, what should be watch?
05:10:16 syv: Eh,
PW and I seem to be the only people who find links, so I'mma gonna just say psycho pass because that's what I want to see.
05:11:13 ER: If Imma passenger in a car, I don't get to dictate where we're going to the driver :P

05:13:26 Devastator: it'll take a bit. I'll get started later.
05:13:33 Devastator: Also, put k-com off until Canada Day.
05:13:37 Devastator: which is Wednesday.
05:13:48 Devastator: I should have bought some fireworks.
05:13:55 Devastator: no city show this year.
05:13:58 syv: I saw Chev's orders, yeah. Would rather people use more boldtext, but eh, clear enough.
05:14:27 ER: it looks like they tried to use boldtext but the front tag got omitted

05:14:49 syv: Irony, do you want a magnet link for Psycho Pass S1?
05:16:23 IronyOwl: I'm familiar enough with it to know I'm not really into it
05:16:27 syv: Coolio, makes it easier to organize.
05:16:45 IronyOwl: not good enough for moth!
05:16:52 syv: Wanna give some criticism?
05:17:15 IronyOwl: bleak and speculative
05:17:26 IronyOwl: focused on interesting yet depressing concept rather than lasers n shiet
05:17:54 IronyOwl: also I already know the concept, and the twist, and a highbrow concept like that is driven largely by novelty
05:18:23 IronyOwl: it's one reason dystopian scifi kinda has to keep reinventing itself, once you know the ration bars are people... okay, they're people
05:18:39 IronyOwl: good points... hrm, not particularly
05:18:41 ER: wanna hear an interesting and depressin concept *I* thought of? :D
05:19:08 IronyOwl: like, the parts I saw weren't bad or anything, but there's nothing I can latch onto and recommend
05:19:44 syv: Hum. TBH, same from me, but I only saw the first three eps. It seemed decent, but not particularly notable.
05:20:03 syv: I also don't have the spoilers for what happens later.
05:20:13 Devastator: hmm, maybe I should pick a movie.
05:20:35 syv: Dubs recommended Sword of the Stranger, which I've seen, and felt was really good.
05:20:36 ER: everyone who dies goes to hell, which is eternal torture. Some people are necromancers, who can trap people's souls inside their bodies as mostly passive minions. Necromancers know that hell exists through their powers, but nobody else believes in it and try to kill all the necromancers because they're evil and trapping people's souls from moving on.
05:20:59 syv: And then there's a ton of not-anime stuff which is good.
05:21:15 Devastator: mmm, trying to think of another one.
05:21:16 syv: Like that movie where harry potter has his hands nailed to berettas
05:21:45 ER: there's non anime stuff that's good? sounds doubtful
05:22:08 Devastator: I remember you liking Terminator 2.
05:22:32 syv: "harry potter has his hands nailed to Berettas"
05:23:02 syv: Looking at it again those actually look like 1911s. Which is a terrible choice. But eh.
05:23:49 syv: Fucking century old rattleboxes now.
05:24:10 Devastator: well, there's Back to the Future.
05:24:56 Devastator: did we end up watching the Blues Brothers?
05:25:27 syv: I know I've seen it a couple times, and I talked about it with you at least once.
05:25:33 ER: I haven't seen it, but eh about it
05:25:56 syv: I'd rather something new, but it's good.
05:26:11 syv: Cool, it's at 0.1% for me.
05:26:57 Devastator: well, I don't watch many new movies.
05:27:16 syv: Memento, Equilibrium, Inception?
05:27:35 IronyOwl: equilibrium is the most fun stupid gun fu shit
05:27:49 Devastator: Mmm, not memento or inception.
05:28:00 Devastator: gun fu could be nice for Irony.
05:28:00 IronyOwl: like there's also a highbrow dystopian concept in there, but nobody cares because gun karate
05:28:15 syv: I also have In The Mouth of Madness and American Psycho
05:28:30 IronyOwl: been meaning to see american psycho sometime
05:28:34 IronyOwl: what's mouth of madness?
05:28:36 syv: Also "Leon the Professional" but I don't know what that is or why I have it
05:29:16 IronyOwl: Leon the Professional is a generally well-liked thing about a hitman and his orphan apprentice/love interest
05:29:45 syv: Saw a gif on imgur where a guy shoots someone in the face with a shotgun
05:30:09 syv: And then I saw something about hitman adopts orphan and went "sure!"
05:30:27 IronyOwl: yeah I'm definitely down for mouth of madness
05:30:53 Devastator: ok, could go for that.
05:31:13 syv: magnet:?xt=urn:btih:6d284723fffb4bbddf50938d2e654a91356278e5&dn=In%20the%20Mouth%20of%20Madness%20(1994)%20%5b1080p%5d&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.leechers-paradise.org%3a6969&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.openbittorrent.com%3a80&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fopen.demonii.com%3a1337&tr=udp%3a%2f%2ftracker.coppersurfer.tk%3a6969&tr=udp%3a%2f%2fexodus.desync.com%3a6969
05:31:18 Devastator: can you link one of those then? Sounds better than Psycho-Pass.
05:31:35 syv: I downloaded it awhile ago, that torrent might be dead now.
05:32:04 Devastator: lets do that instead.
05:32:18 Devastator: then maybe hitman movie, and then maybe something else.
05:32:50 syv: Sure you don't want to do a series too?
05:33:05 syv: It is nice to have something episodic since that adapts better to different time availabilities
05:33:07 Devastator: that'll take longer.
05:33:41 syv: Are you refusing Psycho-Pass?
05:33:43 Devastator: tbh, I kinda want to work my way through game of thrones if I do something episodic next.
05:33:55 Devastator: or watch PM3 with someone who hasn't seen it yet.
05:34:00 Devastator: yeah, I'll get psycho-pass.
05:36:10 syv: I like how the pinned comment on that video is about someone having sex and hoping he didn't get the girl pregnant. Posted two years ago. With people periodically asking "WELL?!" every few months.
05:36:37 syv: I hope someday I will go back to that video and find an answer.

05:37:26 syv: Is the torrent still alive
05:39:14 ER: leon s kennedy, the protaganist of resident evil 2
05:39:44 syv: Looks like seventy hours of runtime for GoT...
05:39:57 Devastator: I don't think we'd watch all of it.
05:40:51 syv: Considering we tend to do closer to an hour of watching per viewing, and probably watch things an average of twice a month or so, that's about three years of watching
05:41:31 syv: Which is less time thatn we've *been* watching things in this group, I suppose, but not by a lot.
05:42:37 syv: Pretty sure I wouldn't either.
05:43:00 syv: Else I would've by now, since damn near everyone I know well IRL has asked me to watch/read it
05:43:28 Devastator: nah, wouldn't rec it that much. I'll probably just watch it myself.
05:44:14 ER: I mean, I'd read asoiaf probably, at some point, but I don't think I want to watch the sereis
05:44:30 syv: Eh, I doubt I'll ever read it.
05:44:36 syv: There's too many good short books.
05:45:37 syv: I like to finish things even if I'm not a big fan of them, so it's nicer for me to have lots of short stories of varying quality.
05:45:38 ER: I only remember bad books existing
05:45:54 syv: Plus I really just prefer stories if I can digest them in a few days easily.
05:46:51 ER: maybe I should get Resi 4 off of steam
05:47:00 ER: pretty good sale on it right now
05:47:03 IronyOwl: mouth of madness is downloaded, because my internet doesn't hate me :]
05:47:18 syv: That means
Dev's the only one that doesn't have it.
05:47:20 Devastator: it'll be a while for me. I'll see if I can get it by tomorrow.
05:50:13 syv: Don't think I want to watch anything tonight anyway
05:51:44 syv: Do you want a PS update tonight? :P

06:24:05 IronyOwl: by which I mean stressed for entirely petty reasons
06:26:04 MidJag: Actually Irony I can never rember, are you in the states or somewhere else?
06:27:41 ER: it's time to make history, yeah
06:28:09 MidJag: Not a huge fan of the vocalist, but that intro/refrain guitar makes up for a lot.
06:30:29 MidJag: But I like that first one more, it's got a cool 70's vibe to it.
06:30:50 syv: Oh,
MJ, do you want torrent links?
06:31:59 syv: We have a couple movies and an anime downloading, for future watches
06:32:08 syv: No guarantee to wait for you to show up, but if you happen to be around for them...
06:33:42 MidJag: Sure. Once I get done with MCAT studying I've got a decent chance of being around for something
06:34:27 MidJag: Especially since I'm not even sure I'll be able to like go to bars or my fraternity being able to throw parties when I'm back at college.
06:35:20 Devastator: Yeah, got some spiking going on.
06:35:35 MidJag: Alabamas probably about to get some.
06:35:49 ER: you say that as if being done with studying is something that happens to you~
06:36:12 ER: isn't alabama the worst of the us states
06:36:32 MidJag: Though sometimes we're better than missipiie
06:38:34 MidJag: Yeah, we've had some spikes but mostly in like mobile and montgomery.
06:39:46 MidJag: Oh yeah some in hunstville too.
06:39:57 Devastator: it's thinking like that that gets it everywhere eventually.
06:40:59 MidJag: Hey
dev, I'm not saying it's not spreading to birmingham, I'm just saying for pursposes of me being able to take the fucking test I've been studying for two+ months chances look pretty good.
06:42:41 Devastator: I still don't want to hear that you got horribly sick because of it.
06:42:55 ER: hey wait, I just noticed why I'm stressed
06:43:19 syv: I would be sad if any of you died
06:43:22 ER: I have a job to go to while a deadly global pandemic is happening
06:44:34 ER: see, I can't blame everything on arbitrary brain chemicals!
06:44:50 ER: a lot of it I can blame on the arbatrary physical universe as well
06:46:04 MidJag: Does your job require you guys wearing masks
ER?
06:46:12 ER: man, do I *have* to try not dying for your sake? it would be so much more relaxing to simply accept death
06:46:23 ER: everyone in the building does
06:49:06 syv: I'm one of two people who does wear masks at work.
06:49:36 MidJag: Yeah and floridas getting hit pretty bad aren't they?
06:49:45 syv: We work alone and don't deal with people for the most part, so it's not as bad.
06:50:00 Devastator: being alone is good.
06:50:04 syv: Family who works at hospital says they're nearing capacity.
06:50:38 Devastator: hopefully masks will pick up.
06:50:49 MidJag: Running out of ICU beds is a bad time.
06:50:59 MidJag: Hell running out of docs to run ventilators is also bad.
06:51:14 IronyOwl: what exactly does one do in either situation?
06:53:56 MidJag: I mean in theory every medical doctor practicing has been trained to run a venitlator at some point in their medical career, so in theory you can call in old or retired docs. But it could have been 30-40 years since they learned. So it can take a while to get them back to a functional level with it. You can also call in docs from other sections that aren't hit as hard but that poses it's own problems, namely it takes a while to get
06:53:57 MidJag: them there and stuff like that. As for running out of beds, you just start putting people wherever you can. And start making ventilators out of whatever you can.
06:55:09 MidJag: Or just get other docs who don't specalize in like ICU mangement or like surgeons or somehting to run vents. But like again it could have been a long ass time since they learned.
06:55:16 syv: I don't want to have my medical equipment run by a 65 year old man who hasn't handed a similar machine for forty years. O.o
06:55:45 MidJag: Eh, that's only if you completely run out of any other option.
06:56:01 Devastator: yeah, there might be people moving from other areas at this time.
06:56:08 Devastator: maybe some NYC docs, for instance.
06:56:11 MidJag: I think their more standard backup is recuriting other docs from other areas.
06:56:42 MidJag: Or just retraining like surgeons or other docs who's specalties aren't being utalized as much during the shutdown.
06:57:01 MidJag: who all had to learn it for their residency anyway.
07:02:35 MidJag: One intresting proposal I saw was using anethesia machines as ventilators.
07:02:55 MidJag: Since in most cases when hosptials start getting overwhelemed they cancel all elective surgery.
07:03:42 MidJag: Which has it's own problems because it can bankrupt smaller hospitals pretty quickly.
07:04:37 Devastator: ..that's ridiculous.
07:05:12 MidJag: What? It kinda makes sense, they're essentially ventilators that can do way more stuff.
07:05:20 ER has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
07:05:28 MidJag: And every outpaitent surgey center has some.
07:05:53 Devastator: I mean that bankrupcy is a risk during a pandemic.
07:07:05 MidJag: Oh yeah. It's mostly because hospitals make like 40%? of their income from surgery. So if that's signficantlly reduced for smaller hospitals it can put them in a problematic position. And COVID paitents pay hosipitals and docs no where near as much as surgery does.
07:07:26 IronyOwl: if they can pay at all
07:07:31 MidJag: So if you have a rural hopsital that was already kinda struggling then it can be a real problem.
07:08:40 Devastator: ..yeah, you can't subsidize covid patients?
07:09:07 ER has joined #einsteinianroulette
07:09:47 MidJag: And I honestly don't know enough about it to speculate how exactlly that works.
07:09:59 Devastator: Ugh, too complicated.
07:10:59 syv: Trump 2020, defund the cure!
07:11:22 Devastator: ..that's actually what he's trying to do right at this moment.
07:11:33 Devastator: call on the SC to remove the ACA.
07:12:22 Devastator: that's not no medicaid, but can you imagine having your insurance removed now?
07:14:46 Devastator: reminds me of the 'anti-abortion' lawsuits. Reading them and finding out that the text says "Employers can remove any portion of coverage granted to their employees, and can do so without providing notice."
07:15:27 Devastator: then portray that as 'providing freedom for people to not have to pay for other people's abortions.'
07:15:39 Devastator: just bald-faced lying.
07:15:55 ER: why not just go ahead and give them the right to shoot me in the head and use my body to make burgers
07:16:00 IronyOwl: statistically speaking, anyone including the phrase 'without notice' in a law should probably be shot
07:16:10 IronyOwl: I'm sure there's valid uses for the phrase
07:16:15 IronyOwl: I'm sure they're not used very often
07:16:35 ER: but that's beurocracy and therefore bad!
07:16:55 ER: we need to be able to do shit without telling anyone because otherwise things would be *slow*!
07:17:15 Devastator: Yeah. removing the notice requirement was specifically called out in the judicial ruling.
07:17:31 Devastator: ie, saying that was not within the law.
07:22:24 MidJag: Yeah. Medicine is a strange industry
07:23:01 MidJag: But hey, where else can I learn how to sew somebody back together and keep invisible organisms from murdering people.
07:24:18 MidJag: It's just really goddamn complicated is the mainthing I've learned. And there aren't a lot of easy answers.
07:24:20 ER: being a doctor is being a mechanic for an infinitely complex machine with no official documentation, for which replacement parts are not made, and which everyone gets really mad at you if you peel off the weatherproof coating just to see what's going on inside
07:25:51 Devastator: on the plus side, you have four billion years of evolution towards not dying.
07:26:14 Devastator: on the minus side, you have four billion years of evolution where literally 'whatever works, goes.'
07:28:28 syv: A
dev just slamming his keyboard until a program he likes appears.
07:29:08 ER: what if we actually gave monkeys typewriters and it turns out they're better at writing than us
07:29:36 syv: "I made an AI that will spend the next four billion years randomly creating Brainfuck programs, and testing them for effectiveness against other Brainfuck programs. After it's done, I'll see if the best program can debug itself!"
07:29:56 syv: They probably used the typewriters as bludgeons.
07:32:52 syv: Comment below vid: "The embodiment of "There is a point where we needed to stop and we have clearly passed it; but let's keep going and see what happens" "
07:33:05 syv: That really is a perfect summary of MiA.
07:33:20 ER: if you're gonna go down, may as well go all the way down
07:34:07 IronyOwl: no real point trying and failing to go back up after a while
07:34:36 syv: Dubs' holegame seems to be winning now.
07:35:09 IronyOwl: tower of infinite just woulda been a repeat of his other bad trip game
07:35:41 syv: Yeah. Made me think of Infinite Heavens a bit.
07:36:29 ER: I'm just a big fan of afterlives, I guess :V
07:45:56 MidJag: So outside of pandemic what've people been up to?
07:46:23 ER: what do you mean outside, we're all trapped in it~
07:47:03 Devastator: watching starcraft.
07:47:11 Devastator: reading mediocre novels.
07:48:23 MidJag: Any partiuclar kind of mediocore novels?
07:50:05 Devastator: nothing I'd recommend.
07:50:29 MidJag: You ever read that red knight book?
07:50:55 Devastator: no, not that I can think of.
07:51:25 syv: Forum games, playing AoTTG, trying to help bugtest AoTTG 2, reading a variety of things, talking with people.
07:51:38 syv: I haven't played Dark Souls at all lately...
07:52:40 MidJag: It's like some massive medival nerd took medival england, and threw in a dash of mainpistons beasts.
07:54:51 Devastator: there's also k-com.
07:56:04 Devastator: well,
syv seems to know about it.
07:56:15 syv: That sounds so terribly generic, unless it's about a sapient unicycle that betrays its creator.
07:56:35 MidJag: The title is generic, but the book is pretty cool.
07:56:45 Devastator: Better title than "Kvothe the Bloodless."
07:56:58 MidJag: The magic is based around memory palaces.
07:56:58 Devastator: Rothfuss couldn't name shit.
07:58:11 syv: No, Kvothe the Bloodless is still a better name than The Traitor Son Cycle
07:58:34 syv: It at least has a unique name, and Bloodless is at least equally as cool sounding as traitor son
07:58:53 Devastator: Thinking of some really old books.
08:02:07 Devastator: no, can't recall them.
08:03:35 MidJag: But yeah, also the beasts are pretty neat. Each type is quite distinct and are fun to rad.

08:17:32 sy: ...I never sent him the torrents.
08:19:05 syv: Wonder when that happened.
08:20:38 Devastator: might go to sleep before too much longer.
08:20:48 syv: Yeah, don't wait up for it.
08:21:01 syv: Their guns are so terrible.
08:21:24 syv: Yeah, I was never happy about that.
08:21:58 syv: I think one of the episodes was basically just a demonstration of how shit their guns are.
