00:05:53 Devastator: Looked at the Made in Abyss manga a bit.
00:06:00 Devastator: the anime definately seems better.
00:06:09 Devastator: it's almost the same, just slightly improved.
00:08:18 ER: iron pineapple played that one
00:11:52 Devastator: does seem pretty
ER with explosion witch.
00:22:05 ER: well, that scene would have been a lot cooler if it hadn't been FUCKING STUTTERING
00:41:41 piecewise: Any thoughts on the anime I recommended up there by the way?
00:42:43 piecewise: check discord, I copied
00:44:02 ER: you mention too much shit at once
00:44:26 ER: I'd prolly watch grimgar though
00:45:37 piecewise: Guess we'll wait for
sy to see then
00:47:13 Devastator: yeah, not sure what to watch next.
00:47:15 Devastator: might be some time.
00:50:00 syv has joined #einsteinianroulette
00:50:58 syv: I watched the first three episodes of Psycho-Pass, four-five years ago. It seemed decent, if a bit too anime. Didn't continue mostly because I stopped hanging out with the person I was watching with.
00:51:15 syv: That's probably at the top of my list for being curious about Urobutcher's writing.
00:52:11 syv: I saw Sword of the Stranger years ago during a
Piecewise movie night, probably the best movie I've seen during one of those. I really loved it and actually felt it was too *short*. Very very good animation.
00:53:16 syv: Planates and ReZero are prolly #3, pretty much strictly on "suffering" and "hard sci-fi" sounding nice. I guess the kino one maybe too, since episodic and watch the best is a solid plan.
00:55:35 syv: "Very strange far future story" sounds unappealing to me. Mecha anime with time dilation might be neat... but eh, mecha anime isn't actually something I like much. Bokurano and Grimgar are just names.
00:56:03 syv: The
sy has spoken. Good luck getting the others to form and commit to opinions.
00:57:48 piecewise: So Grimgar is basically an Isekai. A bunch of kids end up in a fantasy world. However, they have no real special powers, no memory of their lives before, or anything like that. So its their struggle to stay alive. quite nice animation most of the time, takes everything seriously.
00:58:47 syv: We've had good luck with shows about kids suffering.
00:58:47 piecewise: Bokurano is the story of a bunch of kids who get roped into piloting a mech to save the world. It was madoka before madoka was madoka.
00:59:34 piecewise: I can't say much without spoilers
01:00:02 syv: Grimgar is shorter, so I'll put that one above Bokurano. Unless you think Bokurano is really something special.
01:00:52 syv: Think I'll put Grimgar in the #2.5 slot, SotS I know is good, but Grimgar sounds more likely to be my kinda thing than ReZero or Planates.
01:01:29 piecewise: I think you might prefer Grimgar over bokurano, though they're both good.
01:03:08 syv: Still struggling with a weebgame?
01:03:37 ER: I just saved and quit, because I should go to bed
01:04:43 piecewise: how would you feel about kino after I show you this image
01:05:06 ER: I'd obviously be down for kino
01:06:32 syv: Fairly eh. Looks like I probably wouldn't dislike it. If it's set in WWII, that's probably a +, but just involving war and guns isn't necesssrily my kinda thing.
01:07:23 syv: I watched Jin Roh awhile back, and really did not care for the story, so the (admittedly *phenomenal*) animation and gun artistry couldn't redeem it for me.
01:08:00 syv: Made in Abyss has zero guns, but is far from irredeemable because I quite like the plot and setting.
01:08:21 piecewise: Its not set any any particular war. Kino is a traveler who wanders around and finds odd lands and people. Sometimes she shoots them, if they are particularly unfriendly. Usually not.
01:09:14 piecewise: Made in abyss had one Irredeemably powerful gun with an irredeemable downside
01:10:48 piecewise: Bokurano is basically evangelion if evangelion could write realistic and sympathetic characters who you didn't want to strangle on a beach.
01:12:09 piecewise: it has a large cast of characters...for a while
01:13:06 syv: Evangelion kinda left a bad taste in my mouth, in all honesty. Which is odd, considering I'm Floridian and love orange flavoring.
01:13:32 syv: It was... interesting, but I'm not quite sure I'd rate it as something I substantially enjoyed?
01:13:50 syv: So yeah, leaing Grimgar there. Or Psycho Pass, which remains my first choice.
01:15:20 piecewise: I have grimgar on bluray, because I liked it enough to buy it, so I'll stand by it
01:15:33 piecewise: I have made in abyss on bluray too
01:15:45 piecewise: and cds of its soundtrack
01:15:51 piecewise: and the movie soundtrack
01:18:06 syv: Mm. Morally, I should probably spend money on PM3 somehow.
01:18:14 syv: Can I mail cash to Urobuchi?
01:19:02 piecewise: I searched madoka on amazon and made in abyss came up
01:19:31 piecewise: I'd recommend alien 9 since it is also about the suffering of potatos but its kind of abstract and weird and I don't think
sy would much like it
01:20:05 syv: Abstract and weird sounds like anathema to me, yeah.
01:20:14 piecewise: here's a review of it for fun
01:23:43 syv: Casually walk past a shotgun on the wall
01:27:54 piecewise: I'm sure you do that every day
sy
01:28:21 Devastator: I remember you reccing it earlier.
01:30:07 syv: No, the shotgun's in the closet.
01:30:24 syv: I do walk past the rest of the standard FPS arsenal though.
01:30:47 piecewise: playmobile glowing alien weapon
01:30:48 syv: ....Okay, I don't have a rocket launcher.
01:31:21 piecewise: you don't have a rocket launcher YET
01:31:32 syv: That anime looks like
Dev and
ER would both enjoy in a not entirely straightforward way.
01:31:46 syv: I'd probably spend the whole time screaming, but maybe having fun screaming.
01:32:14 piecewise: I'll start looking for good anime movies too
01:32:24 piecewise: since those are a little easier to accept
01:32:53 syv: I think I'd rather watch traditional movies.
01:32:58 syv: Like, Memento or something.
01:33:07 syv: Been wanting to see that for a looong time.
01:33:52 syv: "Was very popular". Action or thriller of some kind, I guess.
01:34:47 piecewise: still need to watch prince of darkness from Carpenter
01:35:13 piecewise: maybe escape from LA because its absurd
01:35:30 syv: I'll happily accept anything Carpenter.
01:35:39 syv: I think The Thing is my favorite movie.
01:36:01 syv: Ohh, yes, horror is the genre choice from me.
01:36:21 syv: I haven't seen Alien ever. And I'd like to see In The Mouth of Madness.
01:36:31 syv: I have a torrent for Mouth somewhere...
01:36:34 piecewise: Did you not watch it with us?
01:37:04 piecewise: We should see alien too
01:37:16 piecewise: Alien is a good movie
01:38:22 piecewise: the Raid is also good
01:39:27 piecewise: Demolition man is fun
01:39:30 syv: The Raid was one you tried to stream like three times and there were either issues or I missed it.
01:39:45 syv: The newer Dredd movie I've seen, and it was awesome.
01:41:34 syv: Oh, in terms of anime movies, Studio Ghibli stuff. Except for Mononoke, we're saving that for later.
01:42:55 piecewise: I'd recommend...maybe howl's moving castle
01:43:35 Devastator: yes I've seen pacific rim.
01:43:39 piecewise: Various old arnie movies people probably haven't seen
01:44:04 piecewise: Moon is also another good one
01:44:42 syv: Pretty sure we've all seen Pacific Rim.
Dev's running a game inspired by it.
01:44:52 piecewise: Big Trouble in little china
01:44:57 syv: Was pretty good IMO. I think there was a sequel?
01:45:09 piecewise: The sequel is not good
01:45:19 Devastator: maybe some jackie chan movies.
01:45:21 syv: Makes it easy to not watch then.
01:45:25 Devastator: couls use some of that.
01:45:31 syv: District 9 I haven't seen, Have been very curious about it.
01:45:35 piecewise: The Fifth element is good fun
01:46:15 Devastator: mmm, seen that too many times.
01:46:18 syv: I recall seeing some PM3/District 9 fanart depicting the PM3 characters in place of D9 characters during scenes, for some reason.
01:46:21 Devastator: it's good but I'd skip it.
01:46:32 syv: So I know it's about aliens and people changing or something.
01:49:28 Devastator: magical girl shows up again in Made in the Abyss.
01:57:50 syv: Kevin is a strange cat. I started making a tuna fish sandwich, and naturally Rouge starts zooming around my legs and begging. Kevin? Totally uninterested, doesn't even want any if offered.
01:58:05 syv: Open up kibble? That gets him racing across the room excited.
01:58:47 Devastator: I've heard some cats don't like fish.
01:59:06 Devastator: Kevin's the fluffball, right?
01:59:08 syv: In his case it's more than he doesn't like meat.
01:59:21 syv: He doesn't really trust food that isn't kibble.
01:59:46 syv: Rouge is a polydactyl female. Full name Rouge Rogue, pronounced Rogue Rouge.
02:00:04 syv: She's not red and she's the least stealthy cat I've ever owned.
02:01:10 Devastator: makes noise when moving?
02:01:29 syv: Not "mews every five seconds forever" unstealthy, but very vocal yes. And her extra toes click against all hard floors.
02:01:55 Devastator: I still don't know how that meow machine hunted.
02:02:10 syv: What I really want to know is how it slept.
02:04:18 Devastator: it stopped meowing when it was asleep.
02:04:30 Devastator: usually went inside hay bales.
02:04:37 syv: And just spontaneously started when it woke up?
02:04:54 Devastator: That cat, for the entire duration of its life, meowed every five or so seconds.
02:05:31 Devastator: it wasn't very loud meows, but it was quite audible.
02:06:31 Devastator: of course, I owned another that purred only slightly less continually.
02:06:50 Devastator: although that one would stop when hunting.
02:07:28 piecewise: Mouse hears purring in the distance
02:08:36 Devastator: yeah. Was also the fat one.
02:09:04 Devastator: ambush hunter. Would just sit there.
02:09:11 Devastator: then mouse would come by and bam.
02:09:14 syv: Hum. I should integrate purring into the theology of the mouse imperium somehow.
02:09:23 syv: I should also just finish that setting.
02:09:32 Devastator: the unfriendly one would run after stuff and catch it that way.
02:10:38 Devastator: mmm, should we tell
piecewise about that setting?
02:11:11 syv: Is it secret or something...?
02:11:59 Devastator: Not to my knowledge.
02:12:18 Devastator: but I think if I start another game it'd be about a solo adventurer or be pirate-themed.
02:12:39 syv: The cat vs mouse game is solo adventurer.
02:14:59 Devastator: yeah, but I mean a more conventional setting.
02:15:46 syv: Guess I have no incentive to try and finish it, then. :P
02:16:11 Devastator: God, I shouldn't have been thinking of old videos and pirates.
02:20:30 syv: If you ran a pirate game, would playing a crotch ninja be allowed?
02:21:20 Devastator: and please tell me you've seen the original.
02:22:55 piecewise: If you're gonna be a pirate, be a giant bird named atomisk
02:23:51 Devastator: ..don't get that one.
02:27:53 syv: Financially Little Cute Labels?
02:30:22 piecewise: Surprised you've not heard of it. quite famous because it aired on adult swim
02:31:10 syv: "A boy's humdrum life turns upside-down when he encounters a maniacal girl who causes strange things to grow out of his forehead and draws him into conflict with a mysterious, otherworldly organization."
02:31:46 syv: Sounds a little like Saeko and Ekrov, but stuff coming out of Ekrov's forehead is his own damn fault.
02:32:01 Devastator: besides, never been a fan of adult swim.
02:32:57 syv: I suspect I would hate every aspect of this show.
02:34:42 piecewise: I like it, but I think its a great coming of age story
02:35:24 syv: Watching that video, my suspicion only grows.
02:36:15 syv: Coming of age story? Is the "stuff grows out of the protagonist's forehead" supposed to be a metaphor for something, then...?
02:38:37 piecewise: Ok let me find an out of context clip for you and you tell me what you think
02:47:10 Devastator: well, certainly weird.
02:47:25 Devastator: and I'd say that scene is pretty high anime content.
02:47:55 syv: Yeaaaah I'm not watching that show.
02:48:00 syv: Bet
MJ would love it though.
02:52:02 piecewise: If you just accept it as a music video of sorts and roll with it, its a lot of fun
02:56:19 Devastator: well that sounds difficult.
02:56:29 Devastator: 'something not creepy'
02:58:42 syv: Only watched the first one so far
02:59:09 Devastator: it's brutally difficult.
03:04:15 syv: "I'm sure they have nice things, like... furniture..."
03:22:01 syv: It ends up being a smiling goomba ish "friend" at the mouth of a dark cave, holding a knife while only 10% of its face is illuminated and its shadow is over the PoV.

10:41:50 er: My guess is they count as a parasite because they steal as much as possible until they sense their host is dying, then give a little bit back.
10:43:30 er: So it wouldn't be a good idea to just go full transhumanist and implant them all over yourself, but if you take one that's already full of nutrients, that's good.
10:43:53 er: Until you have to pry them back off. We also saw that.
10:44:59 er: Hmm, I guess there's actually not very much to speculate about, then. It's all in the text.
