01:12:59 ER: okay, let's try a gaping dragon
01:13:11 ER: and see how horrible its stipulation is
01:30:24 ER: gaping dragon stipulation is decreased poison resist
02:37:33 ER: moonlight butterfly is still easy money
03:55:15 syv has joined #einsteinianroulette
03:56:02 syv: It really sounds like the name of some pokémon.
03:58:07 ER: so I beat that gaping dragon, got a little bit of magic on, and then... got beatris to kill the moonlight butterfly, I guess.
03:58:48 syv: At risk of spoiling myself, what's Butterfly do? Or should I just discover it myself?
03:58:58 ER: I helped by three-shotting the stone guardian, shooting some largely ineffective arrows, and getting the last hit in when it landed. >.>
03:59:08 syv: Also, how'd you deal with Gaping's reinforcement?
03:59:21 ER: Doesn't do much. Just makes vagrants spawn.
03:59:37 syv: But vagrants are *useful*!
03:59:59 syv: Oh,
Dev? Work, or something else?
04:00:17 syv: Are they the murderous evil vagrants that can oneshot you...?
04:00:25 ER: First time, I summoned lau and sol, cut off its tail, and then got overwhelmed when they both died. Second time I didn't summon, and just took care of the channeler with a bow while the dragon was doing some big dumb thing.
04:01:30 Devastator: Yeah, got a notification for a possible job with a very large company.
04:01:43 ER: I've only seen one vagrant, and it shot only physical damage projectives that I could block, did slow and weak claw attacks, and died in one shot from my big sword. and it dropped a humanity.
04:02:20 Devastator: lots of stuff to do over the next few days.
04:02:23 syv: Huh. I brought Solaire in with me specifically because I knew I'd want a distraction while I dealt with whatever mobs were around, but he died quick and I found sniping the channeler very stressful. Gaping also mostly stopped faceplanting affter Solaire's death, I was thinking its AI had been screwed with.
04:03:18 ER: well, was your bow upgraded?
04:03:34 ER: mine was +5, that might be important.
04:04:16 ER: the soul arrows also did pretty tiny damage to me and didn't stagger me, so the shooting part was easy.
04:04:55 syv: I had ten vit and no armor, so buffed soul arrows were pretty worrying...
04:05:15 ER: I don't tend to find myself wanting for range, and the faster shots with a shorty is good.
04:06:21 syv: I should really just go buy a damn shortbow. I always just rush the composite bow and level that, but it'll be awhile before I go through New Londo.
04:06:44 ER: Now, I am playing this as a fairly vanilla warrior, with a 100% shield and midrolling equip load because it seemed most flexible to what the mod might demand of me.
04:06:56 syv: Composite bow is best general purpose, Pharis' bow is most efficient for chee--I mean sniping.
04:07:21 ER: heater makes up for it, mostly ;p
04:07:34 syv: I have a heater and zweihander and fastroll.
04:08:17 MidJag has joined #einsteinianroulette
04:09:06 Devastator: not so much at the moment.
04:09:13 Devastator: but very busy for the next few days.
04:09:23 MidJag: Just frustrated with it.
04:09:34 Devastator:
MJ, should
syv update Pumsy's so I can progress a character towards becoming a werewolf?
04:09:54 ER: that's still not going to happen, but the answer is still yes.
04:09:59 syv: I was about to suggest Running With Rifles, since all four of us have it.
04:10:14 ER: that doesn't sound like dark souls
04:10:19 syv: And also, all four of us being here and available us unusual.
04:10:33 syv: Very true, Equal Reticulant.
04:10:34 MidJag: I unforutnelly am not near a connection anywhere near good enough for that and I'm not by a PC. My apologies
04:10:44 Devastator: I could stream some of it.
04:10:54 MidJag: And yes
syv, you should update
04:11:27 syv: I'll update if you beat Dark Souls next time you have free time.
04:11:28 Devastator: It would happen, if
syv updated.
04:11:29 MidJag: Also I've recovered from my accidental all nighter so yay
04:11:49 Devastator: I could stream some more DS for
PW, when he's on next.
04:14:47 ER: going to go say hi to havel
04:15:20 syv: Who kills Havel AFTER Taurus?
04:16:56 ER: someone who doesn't have a master key?
04:17:20 syv: Who doesn't take the master key?
04:20:02 MidJag: So is this the remasterd version?
04:21:11 syv: He's running the Scorched Contract mod.
04:22:12 syv: How do you have so little stamina?!
04:24:33 syv: Ahh, anyway,
MJ, Scorched Contract adds extra challenge for every boss he kills, and he has to kill *every* boss before he can fight the final boss and win the game.
04:26:56 syv: So far 1: he's forced to auto-use souls, 2: random miniboss gargoyles spawn around the world, 3: all bossfights have minor enemies in them, 4: He has no base bleed resist, 5: He has no base poison resist, and 6: aggressive vagrants spawn into the world.
04:27:31 syv: A mechanic that the vast majority of people never ever see.
04:27:49 syv: It took me 300 hours before I saw a naturally occurring vagrant.
04:29:24 syv: Basically, whenever you drop a particularly valuable item, the game records the item and sends a "drift bag" to a random connected player, who has an item bag appear in some out-of-the-way spot with minor loot. If they don't pick it up, it'll be sent to another player.
04:30:25 syv: After ten rounds of this, they'll evolve into little orb crab monsters, which run away from you and disappear like Crystal Lizards. If killed, they drop a valuable generic item, more valuable than when they were just a bag.
04:30:59 syv: After ten more passes of not-being-killed, they become white ohantoms (I think) and drop a really good item, like a slab or something. I forget exactly.
04:32:09 syv: Evil vagrants instead appear if a player dies and loses a bloodstain with a ton of souls or loose humanity, and they skip the drift bag step. They can also shoot a dark-bead style magic attack which is fully capable of oneshotting a person if unblocked.
04:33:17 Devastator: huh, so if I was on online mode I'd be making horrific monsters for other people every time I die with 60k souls?
04:34:05 syv: Though they're not really horrific, more "What the hell is that thing? I've never seen that here before. Is it a bug or so--oh god how did I die?!"
04:34:06 ER: that fact helps take the sting out a little :P
04:34:27 Devastator: is that feature in DS3?
04:36:00 ER: so yeah, moonlight stipulation just like makes humanity more farmable :V
04:36:01 Devastator: yeah, looks like no.
04:36:57 syv: I think you're right, some boss will ave an auto-use penalty for humanity.
04:43:10 syv: Huh, I always just used the stairs to repeatedly plunge attack that one. Pyromancy is good.
04:45:39 syv: How much strength do you have?
04:46:44 syv: Huh. +5 claymore, I guess.
04:49:26 syv: Yeah, it does comparable damage to my zwei+2, but with a fraction of the stamina/recovery. I should really upgrade my junk.
04:51:29 syv: I just dislike having one single high level weapon.
04:52:43 ER: shards are cheap; taking things to +5 is basically free in the long run
04:53:25 syv: In the short term, upgrading one big weapon to +5 is a level.
04:54:54 MidJag: just play it like you hate yourself, broken short sword only
04:55:31 syv: It's got a good moveset, but that's all it has.
04:55:51 MidJag: I understand it makes everything take forever right?
04:56:04 ER: pretend to be zerolenny run
04:56:31 syv: Pretty much, just does low damage. It's a challenge run for people who want to pretend they do challenge runs.
04:57:25 ER: hell yeah, that jump is a dick usually
04:57:44 MidJag: So what's an actual challenge run then?
04:57:49 syv: I did some dual broken-swords invasions awhile back, with twinked max level swords. It was surprisingly practical, but only because few of the players were duellists.
04:58:07 MidJag: That just sounds like hell
04:58:54 syv: NG+7 means you have to dodge everything, and it takes awhile. SL1 means you have to think differently, and can't just level out of problems like with the BSS challenge.
04:59:22 syv: Bow-only, no shield, and no heal are simpler challenge runs.
04:59:31 MidJag: So what about a BSS Sl1?
04:59:58 MidJag: Bow only keyboard and mouse sounds like a true challenge run
04:59:59 syv: It would take forever and you wouldn't be able to beat it because the four kings would be virtually impossible.
05:01:26 syv: I haven't tried that. I've tried bow only SL3 no roll/block, but it was substantially easier than SL1 no roll/block.
05:01:32 ER: I might try a standard SL1 some time, I do like pyromancu ;p
05:02:25 syv: Bow only is honestly pretty weak for a challenge run, since bows are actually really good. Even keyboard only, I find fipping with a composite bow to actually be the EASIEST way to fight Manus.
05:03:17 syv: He had decent lockon range, and all his long attackd are heavily telegraphed, plus two of his three magic attacks are nullified by range.
05:03:21 ER: dogs with bonfires in their mouths so when they bark estus comes out
05:03:58 MidJag: doggos are the worst in DS.
05:04:09 syv: I never fight those dogs fair if I can help it. The two nearest the bonfire can be cheesed by going upstairs and letting them walk off a ledge, I ALWAYS do that.
05:04:38 syv: The firedogs are even worse, by so much. Small, so they're hard to hit, and they do ridiculous damage.
05:04:50 MidJag: I still say they the firedogs should be called hotdogs
05:05:08 MidJag: in keeping with the foodbased nameing of dark soul things :P
05:05:15 syv: Hotdogs are the death of me.
05:06:10 ER: I think they're not to bad, if you get the right approach
05:06:24 MidJag: and it makes it so much more entertaining to say.
05:06:53 ER: flamebark is obvious because they stop running right before they do it, and other attacks are physical so you can block fine
05:07:07 syv: The only ground attack weapons I like are the greatscythe and zweihander. GS is terrible for blighttown, and zwei has far too much startup to be dog usable.
05:08:44 syv: Which directly results in most of my fights with them being a stream of curses as I struggle to get close enough for my scimitar or rapier or whatever to hit, while also manuevering and hoping the OTHER dog (there's always another waiting to flame you when you commit, even if you killed both already) doesn't murder me.
05:10:06 syv: This specific spot was put in because the developers hate you.
05:10:41 syv: And god damn that was trivialized by having a good weapon. I had to make do with a +2 winged spear! That's like nine R1s per trog!
05:11:28 Devastator: Why did you have to deal with a +2 winged spear?
05:12:07 syv: Because +3 requires 2 shards, so I could make a +2 rapier instead of having a slightly better spear.
05:13:08 syv: Of course I have, I didn't die there.
05:15:57 syv: You don't even HAVE any int stuff...
05:16:01 MidJag: what does int do in DS anyway?
05:16:38 syv: It's weir that trog grabs do less damage than hotdog bites.
05:17:19 MidJag: and see it's so much improved saying hot dogs.
05:17:24 ER: want +14 int, cause CAST LIGHT
05:17:36 syv: That is an excellent point.
05:18:02 syv: Though planning for TotG at Blighttown is very long term indeed.
05:18:11 ER: also in case stipulations do something weird to make me want to be a sorcerer
05:19:37 syv: ...Oh god, it occurs to me, there's probably a black phantom stipulation. Black phantom skeledogs are the worst enemies in the game.
05:21:03 syv: Planning for TotG early is wise.
05:21:57 syv: How do you have eleven blooming clumps?
05:22:18 syv: Did you buy a ton off the moss lady?
05:22:41 syv: Greatshield + claymore isn't the best.
05:23:35 ER: I bought a few bloomings from the lady, but the rest are from plant people
05:24:33 syv: That's a pretty awesome vagrant.
05:26:23 syv: He got me when I went through. Twoshot me on that ledge.
05:28:44 ER: and
dev, THIS is the bestworst weapon
05:29:28 syv: Now put on the black leather set.
05:30:27 syv: I actually didn't know where that was actually found until I played through helping
MJ. Whips just suck so much I never cared about obtaining the base version.
05:31:35 ER: it is strange how they put it in place where it's both missible and not a very good weapon if you switch right to it
05:31:53 syv: It's not a very good weapon ever.
05:32:26 syv: It's outperformed in literally every role by cheap and common weapons.
05:33:53 syv: That coat jusr looks great.
05:34:06 syv: The whole set does, wanderer has the best fashion.
05:36:41 ER: being 0.3 off from light roll... feelbadman
05:36:56 Devastator: one more stat point.
05:37:03 syv: Just run to the bonfire, it's right there.
05:40:20 syv: Someone leveled resistance.
05:43:00 syv: Your great scythe is in storage? ;-;
05:44:06 Devastator: What's wrong with resistance?
05:45:47 syv: Literally, all the starting classes have the same stat total if you consider their level differences, *and* ignore Resistance's existence.
05:46:54 syv: The difference between 1 and 99 res is also very low, like one piece of decent plate armor. The difference between 1 and 99 endurance is fatrolling when you're nake and holding a sword, and flastrolling in the heaviest armor with a greatsword.
05:58:27 Devastator: is the last point of resistance better than the previous ones?
05:58:48 syv: No. It's basically meaningless, as for all stats
06:27:44 Devastator: I don't mean like that, I meant if each point of defense is worth more than the previous ones?
06:29:10 syv: There is no explanation anywhere on the internet of the exact mechanics of how defense works; however it's pretty clear that each point is more valuable the less points you alreay have.
06:41:55 ER: ...should probably have swapped for a different pyromancy
06:44:46 syv: Claymore's not a good weapon for this fight.
06:49:44 syv: Reinforce a polearm, polearm R1s stunlock her.
06:50:05 syv: Great Scythe would be a great choice.
06:53:52 syv: Permanent egghead means I can't wear the mask of the child!
06:56:53 syv: Hey, does your egghead kick?
07:00:47 syv: Eggheads modify your kick attacks after their second stage, but I can't recognize the head's stage visually.
07:01:09 syv: I'm legitimately curious whether it starts with the modified kick.
07:01:29 ER: nah, it starts at the first level
07:07:23 syv: You've never tried to fight Ceaseless legit, have you?
07:07:56 syv: I would highly recommend you not make today the day, unless you want to be here a couple hours.
08:14:03 Devastator: So how are you doing,
MJ?
08:16:36 MidJag: Tired, I got done with my job for the summer and I'm wrapping up the online class I was takeing so after this weekend I'm pretty much done until school starts up again.
08:17:26 MidJag: Job was intresting, just this last week was brutal getting everything done.
08:17:58 MidJag: Like I didn't actually leave my lab the entire night Wensday.

08:25:23 Devastator: Yeah, got something like an upcoming job interview and there's a whole bunch of stuff to get ready for it.
08:26:34 MidJag: Ah, well good luck then, I'm sure you'll be fine.
08:29:11 Devastator: Hope so. About three thousand people locally work for them.
08:29:52 MidJag: huh, what sorta industry if you don't mind me asking?
08:30:30 Devastator: Well, Forest Products, more.

23:04:47 Devastator: "It feels odd to say this, but the good thing is that piracy does exist."
23:05:03 Devastator: I can't watch that without imagining it as being Gordon Freeman's podcast.
23:05:24 Devastator: His voice is just too distinctive.
23:09:44 ER: Hmm, he raises a good point there. No reason why small scale multiplayer games can't live forever.
23:11:27 Devastator: Hell, I can play entirely official games of Tribes 2 over Lan.
23:11:36 ER: It's sad that games can be allowed to just die forever.
23:12:05 Devastator: Although, to be fair, I can understand that with things like 100 person battlegrounds or full on MMOs.
23:13:03 ER: Well, I'm sure there are some number of people out there who would run a server beefy enough for a 100 player thing.
23:13:55 ER: Especially if batroy stays a popular format and they can put ads on their server >.>
23:14:12 Devastator: Still, though, more understandable.
23:14:32 Devastator: or if features are dropped like anticheats.
23:14:44 ER: I have no idea how mmos even work, so that's not something I can comment much on. :P
23:18:45 Devastator: They're complicated.
23:19:49 ER: I'd think with something like that, even the specific hardware might be important, like with certain console games
23:20:20 ER: because of optimization, and only being intended to be run on one specific machine
23:22:23 Devastator: Optimization takes more effort than most MMO devs, so..
23:23:16 ER: "for once, having a crappy internet infrastructure might be doing us a favor"
